I really don't recall there being much controversy with the SEC champion in the past.

I think you may be mis-remembering or forgetting some things. Back in the day, a team could win a head-to-head matchup against a rival yet still finish lower in the standings or miss out on the title if they accumulated an extra conference loss elsewhere. The pre SECCG system produced frequent co-champions or disputed claims throughout the 59 years of its existence.
I'm not saying it was better or worse, but like any other system, it was full of flaws and subjectivity - as well as irregularities in scheduling. LSU would beat Georgia who would beat Auburn who would beat LSU. Who should be the SEC Champ then? And Georgia might not even have to play Alabama that year. That's unfair! Etc., etc.
There was always, and will always, be something to complain about because it will never be perfectly fair. Even more so since the SEC has gotten stronger, not weaker, since then.
As we get more playoff games, and it is going to go to 32 imo, the SEC will ultimately benefit regardless of the difficulty of our schedule and often because of it.
Again - jmvho.

What is the point of being in the SEC outside of the check.
Not being a pussy, that’s a pretty good point
