Only one time in the last 10 seasons have Ole Miss and Miss State combined for more wins than the Western Division champion. That year (2003), Ole Miss and Miss State combined for only 1 more win than division champion LSU.
2002: Champ 6 wins; OM/MSU 3 wins
2003: Champ 7; OM/MSU 8
2004: Champ 8; OM/MSU 5
2005: Champ 7; OM/MSU 2
2006: Champ 7; OM/MSU 3
2007: Champ 6; OM/MSU 4
2008: Champ 8; OM/MSU 7
2009: Champ 8; OM/MSU 7
2010: Champ 8; OM/MSU 5
2011: Champ 8; OM/MSU 2
2002: Champ 6 wins; OM/MSU 3 wins
2003: Champ 7; OM/MSU 8

I am amazed that there are 5 out of 10 undefeated in SEC teams in that time frame

Ole Miss and Mississippi State should merge into one state university. It's pretty obvious that their state isn't big or wealthy enough to support two major colleges. Arkansas and LSU are doing pretty well being the only major colleges in their state. If LSU or Arkansas had to share the state with another major school, they wouldn't be any better than Ole Miss.

Disagree. It would certainly affect them, but to say that they'd be as bad as Ole Miss or MSU is just dumb.

Your right if Mississippi had only one major university, we would compete at a much higher level, probably similar to Arkansas.
If Arkansas had another in state big SEC school, it would be similar to MSU - OM.
Louisiana has the population though that they could get away with having 2 SEC schools much like Alabama does.

I thought Ole Miss won it that year.

If Arkansas had a major university, such as an Ag school like MSU, in say LIttle Rock where there is plenty of people, local money, and close proximity to the delta farmers and all the cattle farms in the hills, and that school was in the SEC, then you would see a similar scenario like OM and MSU. Arkansas and MIssissippi have similar populations.

Florida didn't win 8 SEC games in 08

completely agree. i'd go even further to say that "Mississippi U." would be ahead of Arkansas because there is more talent in the Magnolia State.

Yep - tough playing in the same division that will have produced 5 of the last 10 national champions
