What you just described is against the rules and it is not legal. $750k for signing a football would not get approved.
How do you put a value on what’s reasonable for name image and likeness. It’s the slipperiest of slopes. We had black and white rules and they were constantly violated. Pay for play is in until someone says otherwise.

The supreme court ruled they could make money on their name, image and likeness. It did not rule that it was legal to pay players to come to your school.

So what. It’s legal for NIL payments to be made. Who cares.

I wouldn’t trust Snakey … that dude is on the take from Saban’s payroll.

If true, then why doesn’t Sankey grow a sack and kick A&M out of the conference?
Conference membership is not a legal right.
What a puss if he is knowing allowing pay-for-play.

He wants Texas n the conference and they “advertise” pay for play

Collectives of donors are forming basically new businesses (or charities in some cases) to market the athletes, to essentially be their NIL agent. Whats happening is that the collectives are just buying out rights to each player’s name image and likeness up front. Essentially buying from the player the right to market them in the future. Then the collective recoups some of what they pay out from whichever of the players become profitable.
As such, they are essentially just marketing agencies. Since the players are selling all their rights up front, yes it looks like "just straight payments" but from the player's perspective they are cashing in the future value of NIL that may never materialize for them in the future if they dont play, or get hurt, or whatever. Risk is transferred from the player to the collective which is able to hedge because they are invested in almost every player and inevitably a few will become the stars on the team.
The payment the player receives up front is still a payment made in exchange for right to their name, image, and likeness. This is the box that is opened. A brand new player has NIL that has value, even if nobody is sure that player will be a star yet. The NCAA will find it impossible to try and stop a player from taking the money for their rights up front just to try and enforce some kind of arbitrary “you have to wait a few years until you get a direct payment for an ad and if you never get famous, well sucks for you” model of NIL

My freshman year in college was '85. It was well known in the SWC in those days that if you beat Texas too many times the NCAA came calling.
...and they did. There has never been parity. The field has always been tilted for certain schools.
Ding ding.
Baylor ‘rape scandal’.
ESPN & Texas losing millions on longhorn network and conference rival 90 miles away emerging.
It was covered like 1/6 in regards to the lawlessness. TWO individuals saw a cell, Baylor lost their HC and started over and still are more of a conference force than Texas.
How much has anyone heard of that entire scandal since Briles was canned?
One of the reasons UT ran away rot he SEC for cash instead valuing the actual sport and tradition.

This is on Alito and Thomas and the other retards on the SCOTUS.
Yea, frick those kids. Let them work for free.
This isn't the fault of SCOTUS. The NCAA still has the power to regulate what schools and boosters do.

I know it’s not. I was being sarcastic because the poster that said it, either has a dumb take or is an idiot.

quote:Magnitude is a factor, I suspect. Probably not more than a little over a million a year for the top programs in the past; now we're seeing some players get that much by themselves.
What do you bet he has been seeing straight payments for many years now, well before the dawn of NIL, and is just now mentioning it.
If you're old enough to remember pinball tables, you could bump and shake them just a little to finesse things. Too much and you get the "TILT" game over.
That is/was CFB's unwritten rule, you had to be subtle with it.
I suspect with NIL, the hidden aspect is now revealed, but the adjustment will be that things are going to have to be more "letter of the law" in return. If you can get players paid openly, they're probably going to have to stand up under the microscope.

And Jacksonville St got the #1 recruit in the nation because they are an NFL factory that has every game televised in prime time.
