Baseball is a much larger sport to a lot of LSU fans than Basketball and I think on some level that has contributed to the bad coaching hires and overall poor performance.
The focus has been, at least for a long time - Football, Baseball, Basketball

We have the second most NBA players all time behind Kentucky in the conference (not counting OU and Texas because most of those guys didn't play in the SEC). Our previous coach who shall not be named was terrible and never had a single NBA player during his abysmal 4 years here.
ETA: Just checked and even with the Texas and OU additions we are still second with 48. Only 92 fewer than UK
