Not sure Saban is making it up, Penn State has the 3rd most profitable football program and the nation's largest alumni assoc. Under a different set of circumstances Penn State would and could have backed an armored car to his house.

And Alabama would backed larger one up to his house that's on Lake Tuscaloosa. And reminded him that he's sitting in a hotbed of talent with "SECEEEE speed".

Alabama and Penn State were the most profitable athletic programs in 2010-2011.

The Business of College Sports collected data from the Department of Education and subtracted reported total expenses from reported total revenue to come up with figures that could be applied to both public and private institutions. Athletic departments do not report profit or net income.

Alabama made $31.68 million in net income—leading the SEC member institutions that made combined $91.6 million. The Big Ten was second among major BCS conferences with a profit of $83.33 million and was led by Penn State’s $31.62 million.

Alabama was the only SEC school in the top 10, while the Big Ten was represented by four schools—Penn State, No. 3 Michigan ($26.65 million), No. 7 Ohio State ($18.63) and No. 10 Michigan State ($13.51)—in the top 10.

Definition, or an example of a cocky attention whore. U r on top of the World, Bama just gives u more money & u have to mention that "other" teams were calling me by the way....why even say that? Talk about an ego....take your 6 Million a year & enjoy!

If the question was asked, it's in his best interest to answer it. It would have been in his interest to say it anyway, but not because of 'ego.' This is the day that the main criticism made of Saban in recent years - that he jumps from job to job; 'Suitcase Saban' - dies. (Or that's at least how the UA camp would like it portrayed. Regardless, it'd be hard to imagine him going somewhere else at this point you'd have to admit. Things can always change obviously.) But him saying he was contacted and declined other schools - that line 'It doesn't matter, we want to stay at Alabama.' - really nails home the point.

Saban is notoriously message conscious and is easily one of the most self aware, calculated coaches around in his dealings with the media. He's notorious for it, in both good and bad ways. Whatever he says, he says for a reason. And I'm just saying, he didn't say this to stroke his ego; it's to help sell the message. Always recruiting.

I was not going to dignify the statement but yes that will not modify the simple revenue minus expense equation

Of course he would. I wouldnt jump on any kind of decision without talking to my immediate family. I personally dont care if he sit on the decision for three or more days. In the end, his statement was enough to put it to bed for a while.
