I was just a kid when they didn't offer Bowden the job and even then I knew they were stupid. My God I hope we don't see a repeat of that, but anything is possible.
I really thought Auburn was going to hire him.

I heard Bobby talk about that one time. It was an interview with Sunshine Network, I believe.
Bowden was already packed. He went to bed thinking he was bama's next coach. He woke up and bama had announced that somebody else, Perkins maybe, was the next bama coach.

I didn't want him to be honest. I just don't see anything special in him from a coaching standpoint like I do Saban and Malzahn.
He's done a fantastic job at FSU, but I'm just not sold on him.

Bama picked Curry over Bowden!!!! It was a dark day for fans
Pat Dye beat Curry at Georgia Tech and then he beat his arse at Bama. Curry wasn't a bad coach, he was just bad for Bama.
Jimbo isn't a great coach, but I think that he is a proven coach and he will be just about the best Bama could get when that time comes.

I think that most people thought that it was a done deal but the board of trustees snubbed him. I think that Bama offered him in 1990 and he wouldn't give them the time of day (I don't blame him). It was a shame that he didn't get the job before Curry.

wrong, kiffin is gonna parlay this job into being the next HC of the Dallas Cowboys. will make 7 mil per year, 5 yr deal, and will be canned into his 3rd year. then all he has to do is lay low again and get his next plum job. this guy needs to write a book when his career finally ends..."how to make millions and millions even if you don't know shite"

I enjoy all LSU threads. Pure entertainment, as is your post.

Neither Curry or Bowden deserved the job. We didn't want the FSU thug crap in Tuscaloosa.

Considering he is a former Saban guy and the way he spoke about the process after their championship I think the transition wouldn't be as difficult as it would be with hiring someone else.

Here's my take on the Lane Kiffin hiring at Bama. I honestly think that Saban is in the process of choosing his successor on his terms, not Alabama's. Think about it, if Saban would retire/resign after this year, and before the Kiffin hire, you'd think that the odds on favorite to succeed him would be Kirby Smart. Now, he is bringing in Kiffin, and no offense to Smart, Kiffen has way more national star power, for many reasons - many dubious. There are not a lot of guys who have that outside of a handful of coaches, including Saban. Lets say Kiffen's offense has any kind of success, the Bama fan base would most likely be clamoring for him the succeed Saban once that day comes. My guess is that Saban may give the NFL one more shot, most likely when the Falcons job opens up. And with him will go Kirby Smart, leaving Kiffen as the obvious heir apparent. Of course, this would all have to happen after this season or the next, because Kiffen won't stay an assistant coach for longer than that. It's a theory but not totally unreasonable. The thinking is that Saban knows that he has a legacy at Bama and that with Kiffins track record, he won't have to worry about Kiffin upstaging him, as opposed to several other high profile coaches like one Urban Meyer. Kiffins tenure would probably eventually be a train wreck. Saban could coach the NFL team for a few years and hand that job off to Smart, or Smart could go his own way and get a HC gig, without having to live up to Saban's legacy at Bama. The hiring doesn't really make sense, and as an LSU fan, I'm pretty certain that Kiffin coaching at Bama will be a very good thing, or a very bad thing for their program, there will be no middle ground. Bama really cannot recruit any better than they are now, so Kiffins recruiting abilities don't make any sense. So it must have come down to coaching, and I'll take my chances with Kiffin. Does Bama want Saban or Kiffin to be the face of the progran? Bama fans behind the scenes are probably asking similar questions, they have to be just a little nervous with Kiffin's track record. Anyway just some fun speculation, some things to think about....

I don't feel like pointing out everything that is wrong with this post so I'm going to skip right to the most obvious.
I don't care what kind of power Saban is perceived to have at Bama, there is no way in hell that the trustees would allow him to handpick Kiffin as his successor just to make sure he isn't upstaged.

Honestly, I think Kiffin is a pretty good offensive coach. Look at the improvement Jonathon Crompton had in his one year under Kiffin. He's in no way cut out to run an entire football team, but he'll do just fine in a capacity where he only has to handle Xs and Os. However, I still don't know why Alabama would run off a coordinator after having one of the most efficient offenses in the country. Makes no sense to me.

I'm going out on a limb because I know LSU fans have the inside scoop on all things Bama, but maybe Saban knows more about the program than the rest of us and had a very good reason to encourage Nuss to find other employment. I'm sure it made perfect sense to the man making the decision. Maybe next time he will ask your uneducated opinion.
