As LSU so clearly proved on 1/9... Sometimes final standing is a bit more important than final SEC standing, no? Or should Bama be upset over finishing third in the SEC in 2011 when LSU finished first?

Who's upset? The only ones who ever bring up the "you finished 3rd in the West" are trolls trying to downplay the season A&M had. Yes, we "finished third in the West" based on a head-to-head tiebreaker.
Who cares?
There's not an Aggie alive that would trade the season we had for the season LSU had. And I daresay if most LSU fans had their druthers, they would rather have lost to A&M, beat Bama, won their bowl, and finished 5th in the nation, even if meant they "finished third in the West".

Not trying to sound like an arse, but if I am a UF or LSU fan, I am damn glad I played A&M when I did. Before Johnny had any confidence in his passing abilities. We were clearly a different team in the second half of last season...experience for a freshman QB helps.

That was a rather provocative way to make a point, I'll grant you that.
Is A&M/Bama the premier rivalry in the West? One season, let alone one game, is not enough to make a rivalry, imo. Beating Bama was a good start. And if A&M beats Bama and LSU to win the West, I think you can start to talk about Bama/A&M being the #1 rivalry. (Particularly if LSU loses to Bama this year.)
But I think going forward, A&M/Bama/LSU/Auburn all are going to have the recruiting mojo such that you can't count any of them out. So I think there will be less focus on any one rivalry, and more just a general appreciation for a murderously competitive division.

We all know... I think the premise was based on the fact that the division comes down to the Aggies and the gumps this year, since LSU will severely regress... nothing more.
