If Evil Genius hadn't have quit before the season finished, Georgia's administration may not have stopped dragging its feet and not made the hard decision to fire Richt.
The rumors began picking up (Jimmy Sexton may or may not have been in the middle of them) that South Carolina was going after Kirby.
Interesting piece of SEC history and another one of Spurrier's links in the Georgia/Florida rivalry.

That's kind of stupid. If you were afraid S. Carolina was gonna hire him, and you knew he'd prefer you, why even wait? I've never understood that it took that to make the move if they believed in Kirby.

The stupid part is equating Kirby to firing Richt.
One had nothing to do with the other.
Richt was 80% gone after the Florida game and 100% gone after the Georgia Southern overtime.
South Carolina was calling on Kirby.
There were rumors among donors that Kirby was on a Do Not Hire list for interviewing for a DC job only to take that opportunity back to Bama for a raise. Those rumors were severely wrong within the athletic department.
What South Carolina did give Kirby was leverage. Kirby could demand athletic association buy-in similar to Saban and Bama because he had another offer who was equally desperate to right a ship. Kirby's leverage worked.
The athletic association agreed to do things kirby's way.

They should be kicked to the curb (I mean to the ACC) where many of their true rivals reside.

South Carolina was never gonna hire Kirby. Add it to the list of coaches that used Ray Tanner like a fiddle to get the job they really wanted.

It is amazing Spurrier got like three 11 win seasons at South Carolina.

The 10 years prior to Spurrier they were 57-70 so still an improvement.

And because of the 2 BCS bowl bids per conference and the SEC being the SEC, no BCS bowls
Truly a cursed existence
