I just need to know what the criteria is for winning the Butkus Award these days... I mean what is the committee really looking at?? I mean for a guy who didn’t even lead the conference in tackles (4th) much less the nation is the the Butkus Award winner?? Now someone may say I’m a homer bc I’m advocating for Devin White but this dude led the sec in tackles and was the sec defensive player of the week a record four times and not even on the list?? But there was also a LB from Iowa that blew away everyone’s stats and didn’t make the list either so go figure... #butkuscommitteesucks

“The selection committee stated: "Roquan Smith proved to be the overwhelming favorite in this year's collegiate linebacking class. He's always around the ball and is very tough, fast and instinctive, with exceptional football reflexes. He makes his presence felt all over the field and hits with the type of explosion that has come to define the Butkus Award. As terrific of a football player as he is, Roquan is highly regarded by teammates, coaches and support staff for his intelligence, intensity and leadership traits.”

The Butkus Award® selection committee is comprised of 51 football coaches, recruiters, talent scouts and journalists who study football talent yearlong. Selectors are asked to recognize qualities that defined Butkus’ career; toughness, on-field leadership, competitiveness, football character, and linebacking skills. Selectors follow a 3-2-1 voting procedure for five named finalists or any linebacker they choose to write in.”

If you can't watch the tape and see that Roquan is the best LB in football this season I don't know what to tell you. Kid has one missed tackle all season and is in on almost every single play. There's a reason he's being projected as a top 20 pick as an inside linebacker.

If you look at his play, he literally missed 2-3 tackles all season. He read every play correctly and just did everything that was asked of him. It's not about total tackles because often time players have the Zach Thomas tackles that are 5 yards down field.

Wow!!!! So I guess being the SEC defensive player of the week a RECORD 4x’s doesn’t include impact plays... Wow... lmao

It's more than statistics and tackles. Your guy is young. His time will come.

Just looked him up....he was recruited as a RB and was 6'05" 258LBS? Wow!

You're right. It shouldn't be that way, but it is.

If you think Devin White is a better all around LB than Roquan Smith then I don't know what to tell you.

White is super athletic and makes great plays, he also overruns and misdiagnoses plays. In 2018 he could very well be 2017 Smith, but he isn't this year.

Smith's 72 solo tackles is much more impressive than White's 33.

Stop being a homer.

Smith also had more sacks.

False, he was just a 2-way player at a smaller high school

Lol at the stupid LSU fans downvoting every post that says otherwise, even the ones that give a reasonable answer. You guys are worse than Bama fans.
