UT/UK had to get rid of the beer barrel after a player died in a drunk driving accident a few weeks before the game

I think it was 4 of them in a truck and it resulted in the crackdown of Booze at UK and their no booze on campus policy they currently have.

LSU thought the game needed a trophy, so they came up with this:

well, they weren't winning any other trophies when they suggested it.

(ain't winning them now either...poor swampers).

My favorite part of it is that no matter how dumb they may be they mean a Ton to those kids. Nothing like watching a game end and the players sprint to the other sideline to reclaim their trophy.

Forgot UF vs UGA giant arse boat oar.

I won't let your Mizzou hate get in the way, but the ISU/MU Telephone Trophy actually has a reason behind it.

During a game in the 1950s between the Cyclones and the Tigers the lines between the teams from the coaching box and the field were crossed and each team could hear the others conversations. The trophy was then created to commemorate both teams gamesmanship during the game knowing what could have come from the communications problems.

See, the trophy came from a time when teams that played each other regularly had a respect for one another and the trophy represents that. As with the Indian War Drum, the Missouri/Nebraska Bell, and the Tigers/Sooners Peace Pipe, we don't need sponsored rivalries with fancy trophies for the game to mean something.

The new indian war drum is a basic drum that probably costed a couple hundred dollars, but the trophy isn't what matters, the game is what matters. Apparently that's not widely understood outside Mizzou.

With the exception of the Mizzou/Illinois Arch Rivalry and the newish Lamar Hunt ku/MU trophy all of Mizzou's rivalry trophies probably add up to $2,000 in total value, it's not the trophy that matters.

Yeah, that's what happens when corporate sponsorship gets involved in rivalries.

We have a fricking Hardees trophy. I think it started in like 2006 or something. It's dumb.

I'd rather have no trophy than that piece of shite.

The fact that so many good programs didn't have their school's honor/secret societies on campus figure out some good shite to play for and trade over rivalry games before corporations got involved makes me want to megacasty, but I'm holding back.

Makes sense. Thanks for the backstory.

I was making fun of Iowa State, not Mizzou, but nice to see you have gotten your jimmies rustled by a comment not directed at your school (unless you actually went to Iowa State) but the other school involved in the trophy.

Trophies can be spensive like the Iron Bowl one or free like the one between the Vols and Cats but they should have some visual appeal and that trophy just does not have it. If they had used an actual vintage phone from the era it would have looked much cooler.

Yeah, I forgot about that one (and I think that was the newer version that replaced the uglier one before it that got broken) what is it about Iowa State and ugly trophies!

Understood, making fun of a trophy between two schools is only directed at the school not currently present.

My apologies for my assumption that the criticism was directed to both Iowa State and Mizzou. I hope you have a great evening.

ETA: FWIW, ISU is the only Big 12 school I still actually like, so I'm letting the portion of your criticism against them go as a peace offering as well.

Iowa St > UK

I am guessing you are an Iowa State fan or you suck at history.

* UK has played in an Orange Bowl, Iowa State has not, advantage UK
* UK has played in an Cotton Bowl, Iowa State has not, advantage UK - UK won BTW - beat Oklahoma
* UK has played in an Sugar Bowl, Iowa State has not, advantage UK - UK won BTW - beat TCU
* UK shut out UNC 21-0 in Peach Bowl in 1976. Next year Iowa Sate lost 14-24 to NC State in the 1977 Peach Bowl, advantage UK
* UK went back to the Peach Bowl a second time in 1993 and lost to Clemson by a single point, advantage UK
* In 120 seasons Iowa State has a .458 percentage, while UK is .499 percentage, advantage UK

How is Iowa State greater than UK because it is not obvious from the historical data?

Both Kentucky and Iowa State have the same number of weeks at #1, so I guess it's not an accurate statement.

I guess if you're going for the team that's closest to breaking .500 all time, you've got to give the nod to Kentucky.
