I've always loved that picture of Coach Bryant shaking hands with the LSU mascot. I've heard stories of where other coaches had to reprimand their players for going over to talk with Bear before the games when he was leaning on the goal posts.

Marines, he died 28 days after his last game in the Liberty Bowl. So yeah, it wasn't long at all. He did say he'd probably croak in a week after retiring. I wish I had been alive to see him walk the sidelines. Greatest coach of all time. RIP

I was around when he coached. That guy was the greatest. Even today, he'd still be the greatest.
Let's all have a round for the Bear tonight!

Not to take away anything from Bear, but I wonder how many games he would win under today's rules.
Well since the rest of the coaches he played against in his time would have to abide by the same rules, probably the same.

I don't think so. Pretty well known that back in the day Alabama had third string players that could have and should have been starting at other schools. Obviously other schools weren't doing the same.
Easy to win when you have the majority of the talent stocked up.
Not saying Bear wasn't a good coach, just saying that if Saban were allowed to do whatever he wanted in terms of recruiting , he'd win the SEC damn near every year.

Sticking with that and 1964 then?
1964 is a AP title for Alabama. The standard, along with the Coaches' Poll, for anything from 1936-1997.
