Rest in Peace, Coach Howard Schellenberger

Howard was born and raised in Kentucky and played for Paul Bryant at UK, later becoming assistant coach under him for three NCs at Bama. He moved on and became OC for the Undefeated Miami Dolphins (then coached by another legend, Don Shula). In the late 70s, Howard took over a dying program in Coral Gables and helped launched by the biggest college dynasty before the recent Saban/Bama run.
His pro-style offense combined with fast south Florida athletes at the University of Miami heralded an age of football in the Sunshine state like never before. Had he remained at UM, he could've very well matched his mentor's record in cfb but he was always a journeyman of sorts. After an ill advised move to professional football, he helped revived Louisville football but he was also a disaster at Oklahoma. His last HC stop was with FAU.
Rest in peace, coach. Never understood why he was never mentioned as a possible successor to Bryant.

Great Coach, met and visited on several occasions. He and Bobby Bowden set the State of Florida ablaze in College Football. Howard and Bobby even met in the ring with gloves for preview to a FSU-UM game in the early 80s!

Met him several times living in Louisville. Talk about someone with a presence. The man walked into the room and everyone knew he was there.
Definitely some “what might’ve been” had he come and coached at UK before heading to Miami. But we had Curci at the time.

Shame on me but I was hoping Howard would get the job in 90 when they hired Coach Stallings. He sent us a message that same year when his Birds beat the sit out of us in the bowl game. RIP Coach.

DAMN, I hate to hear that!
He was one helluva coach..had to have been with his pedigree!
He really figured it out down at Miami...put a wall around south Florida where there was enough talent to stock a league, and went about working his magic.
Hearing this really makes me nostalgic.

In January he was awarded the Paul "Bear" Bryant lifetime achievement award for coaching.

“I am truly honored to receive the Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Howard Schnellenberger in a statement. “It is an even greater honor to be placed with past honorees, most of whom have been friends and colleagues at one time or another. I am reflecting on the five years we were with Coach Bryant at Alabama and the three national championships. Coach Bryant was always a mentor and friend, and one of my favorite memories is being tasked by Coach Bryant to recruit Joe Namath. We look forward to celebrating this Lifetime Achievement Award with everyone.”

It is a CRIME that he isn’t in the Hall of Fame.

Kinda ruined Alabama’s chances for winning all 6 of what are now considered the NY6 bowls.
He beat Bama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, and that’s a bowl that’s kinda hard for an SEC team to get into.

Most famously, he helped recruit quarterback Joe Namath from Beaver Falls, Pa., to Alabama. It was Schnellenberger who flew to Pennsylvania to escort the much sought-after Namath to Tuscaloosa, writing bad checks to cover travel expenses after he was forced to stay several days longer than he’d originally planned.
“My job was to get Joe to Alabama for an official visit,” Schnellenberger told author Mark Kriegel for his 2004 book “Namath”. “The big thing was getting him out of Beaver Falls before the eastern schools got wind that he was free.”
Said Namath, “My mother took a liking to Coach Schnellenberger. My mother went upstairs packed my bags and said ‘Take him.’”

The fact that Alabama was able to get an invite was a matter of strange circumstances too. Most schools were protesting Arizona’s refusal to make MLK day a state holiday.

Were there a bunch of baws on 52k BBS connections back in the day lamenting the politicization of sports back in 1990?

quote:Coach Bryant got a call one day from Coach Nugent(?) of Maryland. He told Coach Bryant that they'd signed Namath to a scholarship, but he'd failed the entrance exam. And if he wanted him, he'd better come quick before word got out that he was available (Coach Bryant said that Nugent was worried about having to play against him if he stayed close to home!)
