It almost resembles a West Coast Offense, using short passes to open up the run and longer passes, but they haven't used the long game.

Yeah that is what I have been thinking as well. Lots of short passes, screens, etc. I keep waiting to see GMac fake the bubble screen and let Julio release past the DB that just bit on it. It never happens though.

Unless they are holding back the playbook a for real challenge, it may never open up this year. Seems they are falling back into the "conservative rut".

Now watch GMac throw 3 40+ yard downfield TDs against USCe

I think it has more to do with what the defense is showing and what's available. There is nothing wrong with dinking and dunking for 7 to 15 yard pickups. It chews up clock and keeps their Offense off the field. If that's what's available and it's working, I say stick with it. Especially since it's a high percentage play. Just be prepared to go deep if someone begins to stop it or shows a D vulnerable to it.

Would you rather

A. pick up 7 yards on first down that's pretty much a given by the look the D is showing

or

B. Throw it down the field for an incomplete pass and be in 2nd and long.

My only problem with that approach is that we have the athletes on offense to say "frick you, we are gonna do what we want and good luck stopping it "

But say your down by 14 in the 4th, conservative style offense isn't gonna win you the game.

Don't say the Arkansas game, without the 2 lucky breaks Bama got, Bama most likely would have fell short.

Even last year's offense took more shots vertically...
