Better enough to elevate the bad vols to 8 wins in a normal 2020? Doubtful

Yeah it would have been impossible to reach the win total they achieved the year before.

I'm probably not going to read this whole thread because it is about Tennessee and they are boring but,

If we are playing the what if game, let’s say Heupel goes the full 7 years of his contract.

Then a competent coach is hired and then actually competes for the SEC/Playoff Spot in 2031.

It’ll be thirty fricking years between championship level teams in Knoxville.

When people say doubtful, they don’t mean impossible.

It was doubtful to reach a ceiling of 8 wins with a true freshman qb and without the 2019 wrs.

None of the above coaches were losers. They had proven their skills at other places, but when they came to TN the wheels fell off and the common denominator was TN. Makes u think doesn’t it?

All of those coaches were trash. At least as head coaches. There’s a reason none of them were desired at the time nor desired after.

There can theoretically be a quick turnaround, but that would require some current powers in the SEC dropping off, and Tennessee putting the right coach in place.

Correct.

2017 was the perfect time to get all the big money on board and try to find a real solution at head coach. Then Jimmy Haslam tried to sneak Greg Schiano in the back door when nobody was looking.

*Side bar*

OhioVol, did you ever post on Volnation or the 8th?

I remember an OhioVol that lived in the area of Delaware.

Wasn't sure if that was you or not.

I did on both, but as tvolsfan.

Good to see you over here, OE.

Butch Jones didn't give you Dereck Dooley results so what lump them all together? Show some appreciation for a few accomplishments.

They were top 10 when we went to Knoxville in 2016. Higher ranked the week before at College Station. beat Georgia a few times. Beat Florida. Had a good team in 2015 when they visit Tuscaloosa. Had our hands full with Jalen Hurd and pulled it out late. very late. Like last drive of the game late.

Butch Jones only looked passable because he came after historically bad. It was always going to come apart after Dobbs. Of course, it ended up being even worse than expected.

Jalen Hurd opted out when he was only a few yards from being the best rusher in Tennessee history. The best rusher in Tennessee history under a Butch Jone's offense.

And Jalen Hurd leaving made us realize we had a far better running back on the roster all along that Butch Jones seemed to not know about.

They had two 9 win seasons under Jones and one losing season. They couldn’t wait any longer so he got fired. Jones had them turning into a competitive somewhat respectable program. Pruitt is another story.

For Butch, I would have given him one more season. Back to back losing seasons for any program should be enough to fire.

That's the talent he had on those teams that you guys have now gotten total amnesia about. Tell me again how Dereck Dooley and Pruitt had those difference makers or results? In truth, the vols have the most dysfunctional administration and boosters in the SEC. No coach will keep it together longer than a cup of coffee until those gaps are closed.

And I'm guessing one in particular still keeps Georgia fans waking up in a cold sweat?

We aren't disagreeing on anything here. But Butch would have eventually failed under any admin. He has always been a bullshite artist. Somewhere like Arkansas State is more where he belongs.
