In truth, UA now has a larger number of undergrad engineering students than Auburn. LINK / AND the avg ACT of those engineering students is significantly higher than those at Auburn (see second to last paragraph of this post for reference).

Attention Auburn chest thumpers. Auburn no longer has the best engineering undergrads.

The avg ACT for UA's freshman engineering students was 31.1 last fall (LINK /). In contrast, the avg ACT for freshman engineering students at Auburn last Fall was only 29.1 (LINK )

UA still has a way to go however to grow its graduate engineering programs. Auburn still has a larger number of grad students in engineering. But UA Engineering now has the facilities and increasingly the research faculty, to compete with Auburn Engineering.

But UA now has the larger undergrad engineering program, and its undergrad engineering students have a higher avg ACT. See my post above.

Here is the thing. It is a matter of proportion. UA now has just as many if not more STEM students than Auburn. in fact, UA has just as many if not more elite students (ACT of 32 or higher) than UGA, UF, Vandy, Auburn, etc. Yet UA also has far more of the less elite students. Its middle ACT range is extremely wide at 23-32 LINK )

Nevertheless, UA is now a much bigger university (about 9000 more students as of last Fall) than Auburn, so it also has far more of the social science, and liberal arts students who get lower salary jobs. So since Auburn has a higher proportion of STEM students, its graduates have a higher avg salary than those of UA.

I guess you don't know about some of UA's great alumni, including one of the nation's top biologists, E.O.Wilson, one of its greatest writers, Harper Lee, and one of the top CEO's, Marilyn Hewson of Lockheed, who by the way, just donated $15 million to UA's College of Business.

If I wanted to study science or a liberal art, Alabama. All things being equal, I like Auburn more so in that case I will say Auburn.

See my posts above. UA is no less of a science and engineering school than Auburn now.

A lot of that is because Auburn has so many more STEM graudates than Alabama. So, if you want to do that, Auburn is certainly a great option.

Not more STEM students, just a higher proportion of them. See above posts.

Yea, I saw that in the news. That was also the largest donation ever given to the University of Alabama. Auburn just had someone you have never heard of give $57 million to the school so what is your point?

Oh, I knew about that large donation to Auburn. Very impressive. My point is that UA also has very esteemed alumni. And we have not even begun OUR $1 Billion capital campaign. That huge donation to Auburn occurred during your recently completed capital campaign. So you might have a chance to be impressed yet. Bottom line. The Harvey Dyke meme is old and you can do better than that.

Vandy vs Tennessee
Tennessee vs Florida
Kentucky vs Louisville
South Carolina Clemson
Mizzou vs Kansas
Florida Florida State
Georgia Florida

Arkansas LSU
LSU Ole Miss
Ole Miss Mississippi State
Auburn Alabama

What is interesting is the fact that over the last six or seven years, Auburn has been enrolling a few more in state students than UA, while far fewer out of state students.

I love UA, but I sometimes wonder if its grand expansion has intimidated in state students. UA just announced a freeze on in state tuition and they are also dramatically increasing merit scholarships for in state students, so I know this trend has UA admin concerned.

It has me concerned, certainly. When I first attended in '05, I'm pretty sure it was >75% in-state. Now I can't go anywhere in town without hearing the grating accents of Californians, New Jerseyians, Ohioans, or the like. It is losing its sense of place, IMO. Most of these kids won't stay in Alabama.

I think overall, the huge increase in out of state enrollment has been positive, but it is way past time to improve on attracting the top instate students! UA should NEVER allow Auburn to attract more in state students.

What do you think has caused UA to be less attractive to in state students than Auburn?

I was really sad when I heard of Harper Lee’s passing. Did not realize she went to the University of Alabama. What year did she graduate? Had to have been a really long time ago.

I have no idea. I chose UA (though I transferred aftewards) initially because that's where my family had gone for a long time, I spent most of my childhood weekends of the Fall in Tuscaloosa, etc., It wasn't a practical or deliberate choice - just something that I was supposed to do.

Maybe baws don't want to rub elbows with a bunch of carpetbaggers.
