It's all about marketing and improving the SEC overall brand. For example the Ivy League is strictly a sports conference in itself but the name is also synonymous with prestigious universities. Of course we don't even compare with the Ivy League in terms of academics but improving our academic reputation should always be an option.

I mean, I'm not personally opposed to it. I just doubt the academic side of Florida, Vandy, even the non-AAU schools care a wit about anything to do with the SEC and it's member institutions.

If I am applying for a nice job in a high rise in New York, LA, Chicago, etc., the only SEC school that will make anyone care is Vandy.

A&M and Florida both carry some weight, IMO.

I disagree. A degree from either of those schools does not open any special doors except for in Texas and Florida.

Hmm allow me to rebut...

The top 25 schools whose graduates were the top-rated by recruiters

2. Texas A&M

That's the WSJ btw. THEY carry some weight.

I think it is funny especially when Arkansas has higher entrance standards than Tennessee and Kentucky. Guess they are political as well.

ASU on that list makes sense. They have a lot of respected programs. Penn State at the top is silly. I live in Pennsylvanis. Hardly the best school here. Washington State makes that list null and void.

Pretty much. I love hearing my Uga friends moan about how hard their school is, best part is I'm the only one with a job. They're too busy worrying about if they are even going to get into the major they want to worry about the job they want.

US News' Univerisity rankings is the most bogus list around. How does one accurately rank the academics of a University? Especially, at the large Public Univ. level.

I don't know all of the particulars but some of the rankings are built around the percentage of graduates employed a few months after graduation of that year. When I was in business school at UT, one of the ladies in the office (no longer employed there) reported our employment rate as 12% when it should have been 62%. Took our ranking from 50 to unranked.

Well that I can agree with.

You are not a Keystone State native if you are unable to spell Pennsylvania.

No doubt the best in state is Penn a tiny Ivy League.

Although talk in Philadelphia says Drexel, Villanova, St Joes are better than Penn State no list ever substantiates that myth.

Not a native. Just getting used to an iPhone. Don't worry about my spelling. Unless that's the only thing you can think of to argue about.

And yes, I'd suggest Penn is superior (I'm biased)...but it's noticeably absent from the list. So that Wall Street Journal list the Aggies keep throwing around doesn't seem all that credible.

Despite what people in Philly are telling you Drexel & Villanova (twice the money as Penn State) do not rank above the University of Alabama @ # 78

In State private Lehigh(#38) is ranked marginally better than PSU (@ #45)

'Nova is far better than Drexel and I'd say a peer of PSU.

That list, as I pointed out before, is essentially a list of where big corporations go to recruit the bulk of their workforce since the economic downturn: Big schools, near big metros. It's a cost/benefit thing (where can we find the most people with a bachelors to do entry level work?) It even says as much in the article about said list (posted way back; pg 3, 4 or 5 maybe?).

Again, I'm not trying to disparage anyone's university, but people should read stuff before they throw it out as proof that their Alma Mater is really one of the top handful of universities in the nation and is just getting shafted by "the system".

EDIT: Speaking about the WSJ Recruiters list, here. Just for clarification.

And, not all degrees at a school are equal. For me, I chose UofA law over other out of state schools with a more prestigious pedigree b/c I knew I would live in Arkansas. Going elsewhere at a significant higher cost would have been a stupid choice.

Finding the right fit is crucial.

Not even sure what you're talking about. I didn't bring up Villanova or Drexel or St. Joel's or even USP. I just suggested that a list with Penn State at the top seemed silly. No need to get distracted.

Some of the dumbest kids in our highschool got into auburn. I got accepted 3 days after submitting my early admission. Got into UGAs regular admission, and wound up attending LSU (went to highschool in ga). I just got offered a better job than any of my pals at the surrounding SEC schools. Not pumping up LSU, just stating college is what you make of it (as with anything).

While what you say about college being what you make it is definitely true, there is no reason you shouldn't "pump up" LSU. Anyone that graduates from a flagship university in the USA is one of the best educated people on the entire planet.

In the end it has more to do with what you major in than where you go. Having a Finance degree from Ole Miss will have better job prospects than someone having a History degree from Texas A&M.
