Ranking the Nicknames/Mascots of the SEC

I have actually been to Mike's habitat, pretty cool. I know there is a backstory for all the mascots, including Mike and Tigers. I was really just jimmy rustling when doing the OP

Cool.
I do like Arky's helmet design, although my second favorite entire uniform is Ole Miss.'

Back during the Shula years when the DKE house was in front of the stadium they had an elephant on their lawn for a homecoming game. It was a big deal and everybody got real excited over it but from what I've heard is the University won't allow anyone to do it again.
Alabama use to have live elephants before games, especially at homecoming. The homecoming queen use to ride the elephant.

Up until the 1950s, Alabama would sometimes parade a pair of live elephant mascots around Tuscaloosa (and even on the field of Denny Stadium) on gameday such as this pair in the Quad in1945. The practice was suspended when caring for the animals became too expensive.

Ringling Bros and Barnum&Bailey celebrate Bama's 2012 NC in front of SEC building in Bham, AL.

This thread is becoming interesting again.

I knew deep down that this would bring out a nice mascot/name history lesson that would contribute to the intellectual atmosphere on the rant.

Not sure I want to go back and read 10+ pages of crap but some points :

quote:

8) Wildcats
Mostly vague and unoriginal.

a) It came from a newspaper article "where they fought like wildcats"

b) Wildcats were native to the area in the early pioneer days

quote:

9) Commodores
This one has no immediately obvious connection to the school, but being named after the school founder is sort of cool. It is also a human mascot, so a bit weak.

Vandy was named after Cornelius Vanderbilt who just gave 1 million for the naming rights and never actually set foot in the south. Similar to Trinity College being reamed Duke when a New York businessman gave Trinity the money to change the name to his.

Now if we could just add UNC to the conference we could have the Tarheels!

Union soldiers said those boys had tar on their heels!

Three teams, really? No originality, no real connection to any of the schools whatsoever.

You do know that the Fighting Tigers were a fierce Confederate unit, no? Maybe they should be banned along with the Rebs?

This is by far the best mascot. It is neither over-played nor an abstraction. It is only known to be associate with our school and state. We also have a great live animal that would literally destroy others' dogs, cats, and chickens

A full grown Bengal tiger would fricking destroy a hog

They are still native to the area. Alive and well. One attacked a hunter about a month ago while he was making a turkey call. Also I have friends from home who have shot em in our home town.

It's like a vicious cycle... Post a troll thread... wait for the vociferous defending of school pride... laugh... bump thread... reap repeated arguments from people (some of them forgetting that they already said the same thing before) who only read the first page... laugh... rinse, repeat ad nauseum...

Brilliant!!

if your mascot is considered a public nuisance and can be shot on sight...it can not be ranked #1. sorry.
