Would you put him ahead of any of the other guys ahead of him on my list right now?

maybe Fulmer... and maybe Saban.. after all they did just as bad as Spurrier and SC they were just fortuante to get the bowl invite over us. His success in the SEC at LSU may have been more recent than Spurriers Gators but in his 1st year at 'Bama was a dud for what theyre paying him.

And yes they had a great recruiting class etc. etc. but Spurrier had one 2 years ago that should be developing anyday now.

and remember I stress the maybes because all those coaches all have their valid reasons for being ranked above or below the other.

Why is everyone giving Croom the whole "turned around the program" but not think the same for Spurrier??

Actually, I think Spurrier is doing a great job at South Carolina. Too many people were expecting him to make SC another Florida. Spurrier just can't get the number of quality athletes to come to South Carolina. SC competes with too many schools as far as recruiting goes.

Not bad, although Fulmer has won a NC.

I look at what a coach has when he gets there and what he does wqith it!!! My top 5 is legit!! Thats why Miles and Meyer are where they are!! They had TONS of talent when they got there!!!

Saban went 6-6 with a team that Shula went 6-6 the year before with. There was no improvement there record-wise. How does the 'best coach in the SEC' lose to ULM and finish the season losing 4 straight?

Credit Saban for a lot of things. But he is at best a B- or C+ gameday coach and motivator.

He also lost to UAB at LSU!! But what happened after that!! I said!! I like coaches that can build with little!! You hate Saban thats your problem!! He is A GREAT college coach!! BTW he Owned Stoops the first day of practice for the NC game. Stoops wanted more time and Saban said OK i will take care of you when it counts!! And he did!!

I don't hate Saban at all. I appreciate what he did while he was here at LSU. He also went 8-4 in his first year at LSU, not 6-6. I think the jury is still out on Saban's return to college. That is my point. He is a great college program builder, a great recruiter, but an average gameday coach. I had the same opinion while he was here at LSU. If he goes 9-3 or so next year at Bama, then I will rate him higher. It still remains to be seen if his defensive scheme will do well against the spread and the SEC is much better than it was in 2000 when he took over at LSU (at least the West was). I honestly think the jury is still out on his college return.

If he couldn't win it with these guys, i doubt he would be able to win on a regular basis with anyone's talent.

Jesus, I DEFINITELY could have drafted way better than the Saints did that year. I mean 1 of our picks turned out to be a contributor. Jimmy Verdon? Alfred Fincher? Chase Lyman? the list goes on

3. Nick Saban
4. Steve Spurrier
5. Mark Rict
6. Les Miles
7. Houston Nutt
8. Sly Croom
9. Bobby Petrino
10.Bobby Johnson
11."fat" Phil "I robbed a Krispy Kreme" Fulmer
12.Rich Brooks

I hate Tubberware. I'm an Ole Miss fan. I have too, but He does the most with the least consistantly. Les Miles and Urban Mayer have plenty of resources, Fat Phil does absoulutely nothing. Nick Saban built the LSU empire, and I believe he wil do the same for Bama. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a terrible person, but he is a great coach. Nutt, Croom, and Johnson all do alot with limited resources. I also despise Bobby Petrino, but don't know a ton other than he used to beat up on my Memphis Tigers. Les Miles is an okay coach, but he has the best resources in the SEC right now. If he wins another NC I'll believe in Les.

<<I thought you said coaching, not recruiting. The term 'coaching' needs to be a weighted average (lower top 10) between program/facility manager, recruiting, and gameday coaching. IMO>>

Good post. IMO, you have to also look at who has done what recently. I have thus ruled out Steve Spurrier. Houston Nutt misses the cut as well, as does an underrated Sly Croom.

Many refuse to accept the fact Miles could indeed be the best coach in the SEC. I think if he were to win the SEC you'd have to admit he is. So with that being stated, let me make my case for the top 6 coaches in the SEC, what they have done recently, with comments about overall records,
head to head records and facilities/recruiting.

1. Miles-- Inherited a ton of talent left over from Sabans' 9-3 team. 34-6 at one of the top 5-10 jobs in America; 1 national championship; 1 SEC title; 2 SECCG appearances 2 BCS bowl victories, 3-0 in bowls overall, top three recruiter in the SEC. Top three football facility. Owns head to head on all the top coaches. EXCELLENT PLANNER.
GOOD game day coach; AVERAGE adjuster. EXCELLENT recruiter.

His ego gets his sometimes.
Like against ArKAnsas.

2. Urban Meyer Inherited a ton of talent after Zooks 7-5 season. 30-8 (?) at one of the top 5 jobs in America UF in three seasons 1 national title; 1 SEC title; 1 SEC title appearance; 2-1 bowl record; top three recruiter; top three facilities; has lost two of three to LSU miles. EXCELLENT planner; GOOD game day coach; AVERAGE adjuster. EXCELLENT recruiter.

His ego gets him sometimes.
Like against Michigan.

3. Tommy Tubberville - Been at AU for more than 3 years; one of the top 15 programs in America; over the last three years has won the SEC title once, is 2-1 in his last three bowl games; no NC but last undefeated SEC team in 2004; is 2-0 against UF but 1-2 against Miles. Top six recruiter. Tp six facilities. EXCELLENT PLANNER. EXCELLENT game day coach. GOOD adjuster. GOOD recruiter.

Smartass, riverboat gambler. Wins a lot; loses a few more than he should.

4. Mark Richt - Been at UGA for more than three years, on of the top 10 programs in the country has won the SEC once the last three years;
is 1-1 in BCS bowl games. Is 1-0 against Les Miles. Is 1-2 against Urban Meyer and is 1-1 against Tommy Tubberville. Top 6 recruiter. Top 6 facilities. AVERAGE PLANNER. EXCELLENT game day coach. AVERAGE adjuster. GREAT recruiter.

Good package. Can't win the big games.

5. Phil Fulmer - Been at UT since he wore a size 34 pant; one of the top 10-15 programs ion the country; one NC when my college kid was 7 years old; numerous SEC title appearances, but on the losing end quite a bit; no BCS games this decade.
1-2 against Les Miles; 1-2 against Urban Meyer; trails Mark Richt not sure of ther matchup with
Tubberville, but I think he trails.
Top 6 recruiter. Top six facilities. GOOD PLANNER, AVERAGE game day coach. GOOD adjuster, GOOD recruiter.

One doughnut too much lately to be considered higher.

6. Nick Saban-- 7-6 in his first year, taking
over a 6-7 team. One of the top 10-15 jobs in America. 1 NC at LSU; 2 BCS bowls in 6 years 2-0. 2 SEC titles; 0-1 against Les Miles; 2-3 against Richt; 3-1 against Fulmer; 2-4 against Tubby. Top three facilties; top three recruiter. GOOD PLANNER. GOOD game day coach. AVERAGE game adjuster. EXCELLENT recruiter.

Has anyone hung his hat on one year more
than him?
