UT

UT grants automatic admission to kids in the top 10% of their HS class. If you do not graduate in the top 10% of your class, and you're white. It's probably easier to get in to Rice or Vanderbilt.

My sister graduated with a 3.7, and a 33 on the ACT, but was around 12% in her class and got waitlisted at UT. So yes, UT is extremely competitive.

Back in 2011 or 2012 there was a story the DM did that said close to half our students were from out of state.

Ole Miss is about 60% in-state. Our last freshman class was 49% in state which is typical. We make up the difference with Juco transfers. They aren't just from TX, TN, and GA though. Two of my college-student employees are from Chicago and my SO is from Maine.

Most. Ole Miss is universally recognized as the dumbest school in the SEC. You need a 2.0 GPA, an

You need a 17 and a 2.0 in-state, but you need a 21 and 2.5 out of State. Average ACT is 24.1

far too much, IMHO.

The in-state kids who complain about this also couldn't have gotten into UT or UGA so...

Not necessarily. Just because you can't afford to go out of state doesn't mean you can't get in.

We're being held down by the state fund for education. Right now all the public institutions in MS have to have the same standards in order to receive funding. Even if everyone at ole miss was on board with raising requirements for in state students, it still would be at the hands of that committee. Its really racist to raise the standards for Ole Miss apparently. It's some bullshite but the honors college has given a nice way for students who want to be challenged to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

It's going to reach a tipping point soon though. Oxford's campus is getting pretty maxed out, if we keep the standards where they are ole miss will be too big to handle it soon. I bet there will be a big push to raise standards within 5 years.

True but if you have the 4.0 and test scores for those schools you're going to have scholarship offers as well.

Academic smack talk is weak anyway, especially in the SEC.

I'll be honest. I'm one of those. I grew up in Florida, and wanted to go to UF, or FSU. Couldn't get in with my grades. I got into UCf, FAU, and some others. But Ole Miss is the best bang for your buck IMO. It was an awesome school to go to, and I'm glad I went there rather than UF or FSU.

Roughly 16% of UM students come from either Texas or Georgia. Another 8% from Tennessee.

I'd say at least 60% of the Texas students are from Dallas and 100% of the Georgia students are from Atlanta.

Used to be 100% Memphis, but now I'd wager it's 65% Memphis and 35% Nashville.

At least that's the way it was when I was there from 2008 - 2013.

Interesting, so why do OM students and grads refer to OM as 'Harvard of the South'?

Many kids we know who can't get into LSU end up at OM as well. Just sayin...............

This. Ivy League schools are private and DGAF if someone is in state or out of state.

I'd go even further than that - the Ivies actually prefer to have students that aren't "local".

Fact is, if you're from the deep south and score around a 30 on the ACT, you've actually got a pretty good chance of getting in to Harvard or Yale. Why? Because the Ivy League schools are always desperate for more students from the deep south, midwest, and the "flyover" states... on the flip side, if you're not a legacy or a recruited student (ie, a football player, artist, etc) and you're from the northeast, you better have a 35 or 36 on the ACT to even have a decent chance of getting in.

I went to a top public school in Illinois and many of us with near perfect ACT's don't even bother applying to the Ivies because you need to have taken 15 APs and have the extracurricular credentials of a presidential candidate to get in. We had a 1400 student graduating class and had 1 student get into Harvard I believe.

Seriously, people who say this are the most clueless on the board. There is a Federal court case called Ayers, which required all MS schools to lower to the HBU standards. Academics at OM aren't effected. Easier to get in only. Same degree requirements. Idiot spewing....

UT still has that top 10 percent of your class bullshite, don't they? I don't know why that's still a thing with some schools. You have large magnet schools with better students in the 11-40 percentiles than the 1-10 percentile at high schools in fricksville, Texas.
