Ain't even mad, but consider the point I'm making. If it had been Auburn instead, do you really think it would be any different?
I agree that they are probably dicks that don't think highly of ANYONE from the South, but...

They aren't ridiculing the school. They're ridiculing the state. It wouldn't matter which school from Alabama was the winner.
That ain't so... its quite clear who they are ridiculing IN THE SONG.
quote:
The song, while contrasting winning and losing in life, does so by taking as an image the contrast between the perennial powerhouse, Crimson Tide football team, and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In the five years before the song was written, the Crimson Tide had lost only 8 games total, while Wake Forest had a losing record every season. Group member Donald Fagen said, "Walter and I had been working on that song at a house in Malibu. I played him that line, and he said, 'You mean it's like, they call these cracker assholes this grandiose name like the Crimson Tide, and I'm this loser, so they call me this other grandiose name, Deacon Blues?' And I said, 'Yeah!' He said, 'Cool! Let's finish it!'"
There weren't calling the Auburn cracker assholes "the Crimson Tide" bro.

No, and if Auburn had been the big winning school at the time, the lyric wouldn't have contained "Crimson Tide" at all.
We're talking about a hypothetical in which Auburn and Alabama have changed places, historically. An Auburn fan can identify with that, I'm sure. (I kid, I kid.

The behind-the-scenes interview would have been something like, "You mean it's like, they call these cracker assholes this oh-so-terrifying name like the Tigers, and I'm this loser..."

Yeah, but Bear Bryant buying every player in the state prevented that from ever happening, so your point is moot.
(See what I did there?

True, and besides. The Auburn song would have obviously been Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," amirite?

And why would they? Auburn pretty much stunk it up in the seventies. The were pretty average in the first half and bad during the later half, with 3 losing seasons, (4-6-1 in 75) and (4-7 in 76). Auburn didn't win any SEC or national championships during the decade the song was wrote.
In the same timeframe that Alabama won 8 SEC championships and 3 national championships, Auburn won neither. In fact, during the seventies, Auburn was 2-8 against Alabama.

heard he had already been evaluated by Tide coaches and they were very impresses with him
Was watching Crimson Cover earlier tonight with Chase Goodbread, John Copeland and some other guy, before he committed. They said he was 2nd on the board at QB after Jameis named Fla St. Also said the coaches were impressed with him and felt he was a smart QB in the mold of McElroy.

How many players would Bear have to buy in the 70's to equal Cam's '10 check? The '72 and the '73 teams, maybe?

Steely Dan will be in T-Town August 20, so you can throw eggs at them if you like.
