The opt out is not entitlement. It's most likely going to be common as players will opt out of playing bowl games because of 1. Transfer portal, 2. NFL draft security (injury), 3. NIL.
College is a new game now and players are going to protect themselves.
Also, on ND decision itself. Those players have been playing 10 playoff games this season. They were under the gun and stress since losing there first two games. That takes a mental toll. A bowl game is nothing more than an exhibition game to those players and likely ask why take the risk of injury and time away during break.

ND and FSU both are quitters. UGA did it on a small scale in 2018 and lost a close sugar bowl against Texas. It did not go over with Kirby and UGA has been mostly a beast since. FSU hasn’t and may not recover. ND is going to either suffer are learn from their mistake. Quitting is easy and becomes the default. When it is 95 degrees and you’ve been practicing for weeks and weeks preparing for the season if you’re a quitter you’ll quit and go 8-4. If you’re a competitor you’ll struggle through and may go 8-4 but you ain’t a damned quitter.

I doubt it’s severe enough, but the Big 12 has already fined ISU and KSU $500,000 each for opting out.
Conferences enforce penalties for opting out. And, since Notre Dame is independent, there will be no fine. However, since they are independent, there is no revenue sharing, which leads to a greater loss in revenue than others who opt out not in a conference.

You don't have that brotherhood in many places in life, but when you do it's special.
