Not a certain program but SEC d-line recruiting in general.

Florida 41, Ohio State 14. Far and away the biggest factor in the rise of the SEC to the pinnacle. ESPN should have had a headline reading,

Holy shite! How Did We Miss That?

I still remember telling Nebraska and Penn State fans that Florida deserved to be in ahead of Michigan. For a month leading up to that game they were trying to convince me that Florida was basically a G5 team and that OSU was going to woodshed them. They all disappeared from that site not long after.

The only criteria that puts Tennessee on the list and excludes Georgia also disqualifies Texas A&M.

LSU and Florida are the two most obvious locks. Auburn is streaky but undeniably contributed as well—one title to add to the conference streak, another appearance, and probably should have had a third in 2004. Georgia hasn’t done a lot in terms of titles but has consistently been a top performer nationally.

It doesn’t feel right to claim Alabama elevated the conference when their dominance transcends any specific affiliation. In the sense that the rest of the SEC serves as brutal preparation for a title run, sure, we can claim Alabama. But it feels more like they elevated themselves. If you count them they’re obviously by far the most important program. But it feels a lot like claiming the Big Ten is an amazing conference because of Ohio State’s dominance, or the Big 12 because of Oklahoma’s, or the ACC because of Clemson’s.

like it's been with the ACC and to a lesser extent the B1G.

Lesser extent? At least in 2013 the ACC had FSU as a nationally recognized team. The big 10 OSU and virtually nothing else. I know penn state is good, but they aren’t THAT good and the west is garbage.

Everybody giving Alabama credit, but all they deserve credit for is nearly killing the sport. College football was at all time high in the 2000s before their rise. Between their cheating, signing the best players from cast to coast, their endless second chances and backdoors, they single handedly killed national interest in the sport.

A regional sport with only 1 relevant conference doesn't sound appealing. It was much more fun when we had to compete against the USCs and Texases of the sport.

LOL at Georgia being anywhere on this list. The Mutts haven’t done anything in 30+years. Vols get on this list from 98 alone before the dogs.

As a not SEC guy at the time, the correct answer is Florida’s championship teams. Incredible teams and there were so many other respectable teams with all of this combining with the “Bama just got Saban!!” Stories.
