This seems to be a new-ish thing. Just noticed De'Vion Warren from Arkansas "declare" he's going to the NFL from Arkansas. He will never in a million years get drafted but he's "declaring." I've seen this with various players and everyone comments "Go be great" etc.

Are these guys actually thinking they'll make it? Agent/family talking them up?

Before if I guy wasn't going to make it he was just done and didn't declare anything.

Who from your school has done this?

Same thing happens in CBB. Could name a handful of guys that go through UK and declare just because that was their projection out of high school and no one was gonna tell them any different. They could've had a great 4 yr career at UK but now they're in the G league or overseas

You never know. There have been several that have surprised me hang around the 53rd man spot for awhile.
The most recent in Cody hollister. Really didn’t do shite at Arkansas. Been in the nfl for 4 years now and is on the titans active roster.

Sometimes players blow off school and would have eligibility problems for next season and don't feel like dealing with it. Others just may not want to play college football any and deal with what comes with it.

Wasn't he done with his eligibility anyways?

frick it, why not give it a shot, and maybe he'll make a practice squad. If not, then he has his degree.

He's the second ranked QB prospect in the draft?

Yeah, stupid decision.

They'd make more money at Kentucky than in Latvia.

Desi Sills did this. Between Auburn and Alabama...landed at Arkansas St. Oddly enough, the Hogs could use his heart this year.

I guarantee you right now there is a 3rd string WR from Kent State or a 4th string LBer at Bowling Green who is convinced they’re headed to the league.

There's just so many avenues to actually make money in basketball though.

I agree. I'd need to look but don't recall him declaring he was off to the league.

Usually it’s because they are failing out of school and won’t be eligible. Sometimes they just get awful advice or feel the pressure to take care of a new family.

Technically, Mike Woods fits this since he was a Hog and has declared.

Was #2 guy with 620 yards in 2020. At OU, still #2 with 400 yards in a high flying Riley offense that didn't produce a 1,000 yard guy.

Maybe he gets drafted, but that move couldn't have helped his stock.

It's all about getting a head start to getting the 2nd contract. If he's going to be an UDFA, it's doubtful that coming back will propel him to a draft spot that would make it worth coming back which would push his 2nd contract back a year as well. The rookie salary cap has led to many players declaring early regardless of draft stock since it was put in place.

You really never know who will be successful in the pro's. Derrick Gore was like 5th string RB for Alabama and even scored a TD in super garbage time in the 2016 SEC championship. He's currently the backup RB for KC and has played in 7 games this year.
