AR, as a state, fits very well in the SEC; sharing common borders with three other SEC states. If anyone were out of place in our league it would be KY?! They only border one neighboring SEC state(TN); however, they do share borders with MO, IL, IN, OH, WV..if anyone is "Midwest" it's KY.
As far as contending; we've managed to make it to 3 SEC title games in 17 tries, and with MEDIOCRE coaching.
As far as fanbase, when you are the only show in town, that helps alot. Sate population is around 3mm almost..Broyles referred to it as "...the Nebraska of the South.." when he took the job in'58, because there's no cross state rival to fight.
BTW, I lived in Mid -Missouri my freshman year of college, and "crawled" to Fayetteville at the end of that first year. I "clearly" knew I had crossed the Mason-Dixon line when I was there vs. MO..without question. Fayetteville, may be "guarding" the frontier gate to the South, but it's hardly the Midwest.

Thats accurate.
There's a cultural difference between Oklahoma and Arkansas and Kansas and Arkansas.
Its even true up here a few miles from the state borders.
We have BBQ and Blues in our state (Kansas City and St. Louis do too, but they aren't typical of Missouri).
Once you cross the Mason Dixon line into Missouri, well, maybe after you pass Branson...
Everything becomes oriented towards St. Louis and Chicago, whereas in Fayetteville, everything is still oriented more towards Dallas and the south.
That said, we're not as southern as Mississippi. We've got a more western element to us, too.
Mississippi and Alabama have more in common culturally than different.
Texas and Oklahoma are similar, too.
Arkansas straddles those two regions, so the different ends of Arkansas are quite different.
The border state I have never felt we are anything like is Louisiana. Maybe thats because the true "Louisiana" culture is centered on the other end of the state, and maybe because south Arkansas is probably the least populated area of Arkansas so there isn't a lot of sharing going on.
With Mississippi, we share the river and delta/blues culture. Missouri we share the Ozarks culture. Oklahoma we share the western culture.
With Louisiana we share The Boot, though, so I guess thats all that matters.
And y'all have sent a lot of people our way the past 5 years or so...
May all their children become Razorback fans.

Yea, I guess your right. But its definately not the South. More like Oklahoma, Texas, Colorago..
Guess its the influence of northern Retirees, Wal-Mart transplants and the Messicans.
But once you drop south of Fayetville it really gets more of a "Southern feel" like Little Rock.

I noticed that when I lived in Fayetteville. There is a lot more of a Texas and Oklahoma influence than Delta south. After the civil war they could not build a flagship University here in the south so they located the University in Fayetteville instead of Little Rock even though the medical school is in Little Rock.....

I question how much time a person has spent in Fayetteville when they call it "midwestern." The only thing that isn't southern about it is the large hippee population...and that's definitely not what I think when someone says "midwestern."
Sure, up around Bentonville there is a definite "less southern" feel because of all the transplants...but Fayetteville itself is very southern.

Fayetteville doesn't have a Southern feel to it. It reminds me of Iowa. It's not diverse at all here.

Well somewhat, but it doesn't seem like it to me from an outsiders standpoint. I'm the first member of my family that was not born in Arkansas, so my dad, grandad, uncle, and me will make a drive every year or so back to Arkansas to just kind of get away for a day and see what's going on. It seems to me that places like Jonesboro, Paragould, and surrounding areas still have a Southern feel to them. Maybe not Deep South Delta feel like around Helena and Lake Village, but they still are kind of Southern to me.
I'd say it's more like I40 to Little Rock then take the piece in the Little Rock, Northeast corner, Memphis triangle still pretty Southern. I'm not there all the time like some other people here, but that's what it seems like to me from the outside looking in.

Obviously. We're gonna knock the enamel loose from MO State's eyeteeth. Then Bobby P's lake and stream mojo will be too much for UGAY to overcome.

Nah, I grew up in Batesville and it is definitely a southern town. We all went to school wearing camo and there were more catfish and BBQ joints than there were chain restaurants (not counting fast food), at least when I was very young.
I think most of the other towns in the north central part of the state are southern too, like Mountain Home. Harrison is definitely southern as well.

quote:Perhaps not on your end of the State, but on the southern tier, not a lot of difference between North Louisiana and South Arkansas. Growing up here in this part of the State we got our news out of Monroe or Shreveport. When we want to go shopping out of town, we go to either Monroe or Shreveport. I can just about name every Louisiana Politician back until the late 70's and even got to meet Edwin Edwards twice. In this area of the State you will see almost as many LSU licence plates on front of cars as you will Razorback. You will see a good many Longhorns as well. A lot of people feel disconected from the U of A because it is on the other side of the State.

As far as Petrino, I personally don't like him. He has the personallity of a slug, however, he has gave hope to a lot of Arky fans and that is something good, and if he is successful at making Arky have a better than .500 season, that just makes the conference better. I think he will be around for awhile, unless a much better offer comes along. Coaches are a lot like CEO's, they have loyality to where their biggest paycheck is coming from, and jump ship in a heartbeat for a bigger paycheck. Petrino, Miles, Meyer, Nutt, all fit in this catagory. Petrino has a bird nest on the ground in Arky. He has nowhere to go but up, and has his brother on the staff and two of his kids on the team, one hell of a free ride IMO. He might get lucky and win the West once or twice in his tenure, I just don't see anything better than that, too many high hurdles with Arky to jump over to do any. better.

I agree with this.

I was born in WRMS and lived in Batesville until I was 17. Grew up in Quail Valley, lived on Eagle Mountain for a while, then over by Lyon College. My parents worked at Eastman for 20+ years each. Still have family over there.

I've spent a good bit of time in Fayetteville, and although I don't find it particularly mid-western, I don't really see it sharing most traits that are southern. Its sort of in-between.

If you ride a motorcycle, NW Arkansas is the place to be. Beautiful roads, alot of great scenery.

I would have graduated from BHS in 2004, but finished high school at ASMS instead.
