From what I understand their punter was an All State kicker in HS. It seems they would have seen him kick a few times.
I'm guessing he was all state due to his punting, but he did kick field goals in HS.

High school kickers make that transition literally every single year.

Regardless of where the person was coming from, they'd have to practice a decent bit to get where they can really kick it well.
Are you guys listening to yourselves? You are saying that it is easier for a woman soccer player to make the transition than it is someone who has been kicking for years.

Makes sense. I would think it easier for him to kick than a soccer player who had never kicked a football before though, don't you think?

100%

It seems there have been teams that held open tryouts for kickers before. Seems like Georgia did it years ago, and a couple of others at least. Pretty sure someone with kicking experience won the job, though.
The New York Jets did it last year.
Steelers did it in 2018.
South Florida did in 2015

This was 100% political on Vanderbilt's part and I hope they suffer for years because of it

Exactly. I don't go in the kitchen and yell at my wife on the proper way to make a sandwich.

No offense, but you sound like a fricking dork. No offense.

There was never any "beating out" because there wasn't a tryout. Vandy just went to her and asked her to do it. That's a big part of what pisses people off.
So why are they blaming her for saying yes?

is the rest of the women's soccer team available to fill in for everyone that quit?

I agree this is a 2-dimensional stunt by Vandy to signal their openness to gender equity. But y’all are a little too upset about it. It’s as if a locker room of only goobers is sacred to you. Do you like that musty smell? Does it make you randy?
This won’t take off because 99% of programs care only about winning. Let Vandy have their whatever this is.

I can attest that LNCHBOX can hit a 50 yard fieldgoal. It was 5 years ago but I did see it in person lol

Human decency tends to appear that way to those who don't have it I suppose.

^This. Kicking isn't as easy as everyone assumes. It really is a technical thing that takes a ton of practice at the collegiate and pro levels to get right. That's also likely the reason why the coaches just went with a squib and hoped for the best but even that can go wrong.
We undervalue kickers and STs players more than any other position but if you're a guy (or gal) that likes to follow the analytics of the game returning starting kickers turn out to be one of the most important returning players a team can have -- more important than QB in factoring a team's likely production for the next season.
ETA: And no, I was never a kicker (unless you count managing to kick it behind myself), I just know a few who were.

They went with a "squib" because if she absolutely unloaded and really got ahold of a kickoff, it might get to the 30 yard line. Also, they didn't want to take any risks that she might get hit.
It was a pathetic microcosm of all that is wrong with modern society.

How so? Vanderbilt's best this year is a roster full of players that under normal circumstances wouldn't be playing even for Vanderbilt. They suck at an epic level because of that. I'm not sure why you or anyone else thinks the kicker should be better than the rest of the slaw.
Y'all are reading a conspiracy into what in reality is just a shitty team operating in shitty circumstances. This is not a normal bad Vanderbilt team.

I am inclined to agree with you; my argument is just that I don't think she has anything to do with Vandy sucking - they've managed to do that all on their own and players opting out now just seems like they're using her appearance as an excuse to jump a sinking ship.
In fairness though, I don't know them so I should probably stop presuming the worst from those guys. I really feel for their interim coach, who is stuck in a shite sandwich.
