It was always my understanding that it was Mainieri’s health that really forced him to step away. Is this not correct?
That is why I was surprised to see so much venom directed towards him. You can’t hate on a man when his health causes his performance to suffer to the point he has to step away from the game. Just like you can’t hate on him for wanting to return to the game if his health has improved.
LSU Baseball operates at a different standard from most programs. CPM's physical health + his personal issues (death of his father) sidetracked his ability to operate at an LSU standard, so he was allowed to step down gracefully. Considering LSU is less than a year removed from winning a NC, they made to correct decision.

I don't hate him
I don't care that he's coaching at USC. I think it's an odd decision for both he and USC, but I don't hold any ill will towards him. LSU forced him into retirement, and he has every right to work if he wants to. LSU fans got what they wanted when he announced his retirement, and I guess he's getting what he wants in a job to coach a baseball team.
The health thing was definitely an issue, among other things going on with him, and it 100% affected his ability to do his job effectively, but I don't believe he would have made the decision to retire absent pressure from the LSU AD to do so. Obviously things like that are never going to be announced to the public, because that would defeat the entire purpose of that type of transition.
But based on what Mainieri said after he retired and over the last several years, I think it's pretty obvious now he was providing lip service and accepting the USC job shows he didn't want to stop coaching. And if coaching now makes him happy, then he should go do it

Personally, imho, this deal was all about the assistants and the money they're getting plus the massive increase in NIL money.
This will be the highest paid staff in the league, if I am not mistaken.
I'm still not crazy about the HC hire, nothing against him, but this was a staff hire more than anything and only he was able to put this staff together plus get the NIL commitment.
Plus his physical cleared and his back and neck issues are no longer and issue.

Seems like a reasonable contract.. I think we overpaid for our new coach by a little bit, but I'm sure the new 24,022 seat stadium we are building for him will help cover the cost.. Plus there will be 6 new suites that cost $500,000 each year.. so the guy basically pays for himself.. that's a win/win in my book..
It's a big bonus that he likes to play on turf too.. that will really piss y'all off.. we will end up being the most hated team in baseball.. pretty much ever.. I still can't believe we were able to use AI to create a clone of Tony V.. Who would have thought that would have happened? I'm pumped to say the least..
Dolly would be jealous if she was still alive.. RIP Legend.

So much "venom."
Are you claiming that some fans on Tiger Rant and in the real world haven’t been trashing him since he was announced as the new USC coach? I actually find his new name Paul Manure that someone posted there to be a welcome change from the overused pasta references found here.
From the outside looking in, I think Mainieri gave LSU a lot. Some very good seasons and one national championship before his health negatively impacted his performance and he ultimately resigned.
Before he was hired at USC, most LSU fans seemed to appreciate what he had done and held no ill will towards him. Since then it seems about 50/50 between those folks and those saying what a shitty coach he was, that his style of baseball sucked, that he was forced to resign and that they are glad he got fired.
I was surprised at how quickly many seemed to turn on him. That’s all.

it was that way before he retired. Some people appreciated him for what he did and some had hated him basically since 2011 when LSU missed the NCAAT. There was never even close to a unified opinion of him. There was thread after thread, year after year, same arguments on both ends. Now that he's back in the landscape of coaching, those same people are having the same arguments

As many have said, Mainieri is a bridge hire. He's got an excellent staff, so if all he has to do is focus on in-game decisions, I think it can work.
Tanner *really* wanted to give the job to Lee, but simply couldn't for a handful of reasons. I think he will turn out to be our Coach O, however, and a few years under PM may help him grow into the role.

Mainieri's last 3 seasons:
117-76 (45-45)
Yeah, but as recently as 2017 his team was playing in the national championship series but lost that with a key pitcher injured.
And his later teams did face a number of unexpected obstacles. Without those problems, he no doubt wins much more games during that stretch. A lot of coaches, including Mainieri, were not able to adjust all that well during that chaotic COVID-restricted season. Also, he was very, very close to his College Baseball Hall of Famer father who took ill and died smack dab in the middle of one of Mainieri's later seasons. Lastly, Mainieri had some distracting, painful health issues of his own around that time period as well.
That said, the transfer portal and NIL issues are relatively new challenges that he will have to take a crash course in, quickly. Not sure how he will handle all that long term.
