...according to TexAgs:

quote:

The irony of the S-E-C chant is that it was the old SWC schools that started it all when Arkansas declared for the SEC in 1990. The Hog fans gave it back with interest to Horn fans at the 2000 Cotton Bowl. Other SEC fanbases gradually picked it up and now most of them do it at any major non-conference win.

quote:

Locutus is again correct. S-E-C was chanted at Arkansas by SWC team fans during Arkansas' farewell, tour. And the Hogs had a bad team, too. The Hog fans picked it up and chanted it when the Arkansas won the NC in basketball. The rest of the SEC picked it up from there. It's really a all-for-one and one-for-all kind of thing.

If this is true, that's kind of cool. But I doubt it is

It's just my opinion. To me it's true, to you it may not be.

I do think it would be funny if we did it if we win our game with them this year. We havent really had a chance to do it much in bowl games...but the posters on there that say they could be on the level of Florida are funny

Sigh, like any fan base, we have our crazies. Most aggies I've talked to, and most I've seen on TexAgs are pretty aware of teh fact that we will be....hurting, for at least the first few years. Who doesn't want to play with the best though?

Actually both could be true. Both the part about it being chanted in the 80's...I never heard it myself...and the part about Arkansas's SWC farewell.

If it was chanted prior to Arkansas's entry into the SEC, it wasn't widespread. There simply wasn't the pride in the conference then that we have now.

So the practice could have died out and be given a fresh start with Arkansas's entry into the conference.

Just my two cents. I really don't care that much myself, I just thought the TexAgs story was a fresh take on how the chant started, and thought I'd share it with ya'll.

I do remember Tennessee doing this at the end of the the 1990 Cotton Bowl. That's possibly the first time I can remember hearing it done to us. By that time, Tennessee knew we were coming to the SEC.

I don't remember other SWC teams doing the SEC cheer, though they did a lot of other bullshite when they realized we weren't gonna be hangin' around. I believe I remember hearing an SWC cheer a few times during the 1990 season. That's when we were really bad. Jack Crowe was coaching. Our recruiting had taken a big hit. It has to be the worst season I can remember. I was just glad when it was over.

I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the chants at the time, so someone correct me if their memory serves them any better. At the time, I was just really thankful that we were leaving that mess behind and was more focused on our future with the SEC.

I remember chanting it when we beat Texas in that final game in 1991 @Little Rock.

i dont think you can pin-point the origin of a chant on something as common as SEC, its our conference, players and fans chant it because they are proud to be a part of the best conference in the country.
