My alltime favorite player. I found some of his tapes sitting in a box in an attic at our high school basketball gym, and watched em for hours. Didn't make me any better, but loved the way the guy played ball. I was really sad to find out that he died so young. If any of you haven't read it, I highly recommend Pistol, the biography.

You know you're a bad### when the arena ends up being named after you. Or was it named after his dad?

Love the pass where he just kinda leaves it floating in the air...slaps at it like hes gonna pass it...then eventually does...smooth.

Like someone said once, all you have to do to beat Pete Maravich's scoring record is make an average of FIFTEEN three pointers per game during your entire college career...
I heard a story from a guy from my area (Wallace Tinker) who played at Auburn and had to guard Pistol Pete one night. He said: “It was right before half-time and we were lined up on the free throw line, I looked over at him and said ‘Pete, you’re gonna have to slow down; you’re running me to death!’ And I looked down at my Converse tennis shoes and back then they had air-holes in the sides and there was water running out of my shoes I had sweated so much! He looked at me and said ‘Hey Wally, we’re just gettin’ started.’"

No you cannot has. Some other interesting triva for you guys. My grandfather played on the National Championship basketball team in 1935. He went on to become an SEC official.

Cool, my Dad played on the 1958 LSU football championship team, he went on to do absolutely nothing.

I believe it. The guy was unreal and it wasn't a fluke. He usually scored a lot...and often. And remember, that was before the shot clock.

That's interesting. I knew a man really well (a neighbor) who played under Mr. Iba at Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State) back then. I wonder if they played LSU?

During my grandfather's day, they used to jump the ball after every made shot.

Saw him at Ole Miss myself. I didn't really care much about basketball, so I went to the game for the sole reason of watching Maravich in person, and I was not disappointed. My LSU friends back home were jealous! I need to go look up some highlights on youtube, I guess.

The kicker, there wasn't a three point line back then...
From an article published today
quote:
Former LSU basketball coach Dale Brown was said to have done research as to how many more points Maravich would have had if the 3 point shot would have been in effect. The study estimated that Pete would have added about 13 more points per outing, giving him an astounding 57 point per game average.

Impressive thing is that 69 wasn't even CLOSE to the record. A guy at a Div 2 school scored over 100 in the 50s. That's insane. Nobody will touch that, even with the 3.
