Certainly was an interesting article, and timely from my perspective, given that I made my first trip to Oxford last weekend. A few observations:
1. Ole Miss feels like a private school, not a state school. After getting my undergraduate degree at A&M, I got my law degree at Baylor and I'd say there is a pretty fair resemblence between the schools on most points, except alcohol. Ole Miss sort of has an exclusive feel to it, even though its anything but exclusive when it comes to admissions. Not surprising that the masses don't whole-heartedly embrace the school when times are tough.
2. Where are all the black people? I know that there are a ton of black folks in Mississippi, but I saw almost none in Oxford, and I'm not even talking about on campus. Is it just that Oxford is that white, or Lafayette County, or what? Oxford really reminded me of the Piney Woods portion of East Texas (I lived six years behind the Pine Curtain in Marshall, Texas), except for that.
3. I think the writer is overestimating Ole Miss's potential simply due to economics--where is the money going to come from? I think Freeze has them on the track to be competitive, but, in this division, I just don't see how Ole Miss has the bankroll to compete at the top on any kind of a consistent basis.
Don't take any of this as a flame--just an outsiders perspective.

View the slideshow attached to the article. They still fly confederate flags in the Grove proudly.
In spite of the good-intentions of the more liberal university leadership, the bulk of Ole Miss fans and students like it that way.

...yes......
I guess that confederate flag is photo-shopped in, then.

So you judge an entire fan base off of one picture?
Are you completely stupid or do they actually have pictures of the majority of our fan base for you to come to your conclusion that most of our fans fly them?
I'm going with stupid.

And you are brought to this conclusion by one flag?

over 13% of the student body is black.

Yep. The confederate flag definitely is only racist and has zero meaning to anyone besides hatin black people. There is definitely no other history associated with it anywhere.
The whole not seeing black people at te Grove thing is dumb. I saw more than a few out there last Saturday. And where I tailgate at LSU, I don't see too many either. The Grove is not the only place on that campus to tailgate, just like my spot is not te only one at LSU. I can assure you there are plenty minorities at every campus.

Most of your fans don't have to fly them. They are still in the Grove.
And if you want to talk about most of your fans, aren't you guys still having to ban certain songs because your fans insist on chanting The South Will Rise Again?
You can chalk it up to a minority of your fanbase, but its still there.
Let me compare/contrast. The University of Arkansas also used to use "Dixie" as a secondary fight song. We played it every bit as much as Ole Miss.
We stopped playing it in 1969 because our black students association stated that it was offensive, and because black students in the band expressed that they did not like playing it. Fans used to carry around confederate flags. That shite stopped in the 1970s. I've never seen anybody fly a damned confederate flag on the Arkansas campus. If someone flew one at a tailgate on campus they'd be a pariah.
Not at Ole Miss.

This is terribly ironic coming from an A&M fan. We have nearly 15% black student body, Texas A&M is 3% black.
Why the frick does it matter anyway? Did you make a point to count all the black folks there to prove some type of notion in your head?

Hmmm... I wonder why? Maybe it's because our team has always been the REBELS. Sure, there is no place for these sort of things in this day and age, but do you expect this stuff to just vanish in the blink of an eye?

The fact that 15% of the student body is black but there are virtually zero represented in the Grove is not something else to be proud of, IMO.
You guys can drape your racism in "class-ism" but its pretty obvious how different things still are at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss students don't show up for football games.
Ive been impressed with the student attendance thus far. Yea it lacked a little bit the other night when it was 45 degrees with wind and rain but wasnt that bad. Gotta say that I disagree with ole Dick on that one. Our other 3 home games, the SS has been slammed when the players run out of the tunnel, which hasnt always been the case.

This is fricking retarded and you can't tell me out of all the people tailgating at Arkansas games there's not one person somewhere on the campus sporting a rebel flag.

I can tell you that I've never seen one in person, ever.
The only reason I know that they used to do that is from videos from the 1970s.
The fact that you find that hard to believe is also telling.

What the hell was that Req? All SEC schools waved stars and bars back in the day, especially the school named "rebels". This whole thread is about how much things have changed so with that pic are you trying to show proof of that?
