Mississippi is the poorest state in the nation. Why does Ole Miss have the perception of a wealthy school when the state as a whole is poor?
So Mississippi being the poorest state in the nation means everyone in Mississippi is poor. Got it.

The entire A&M system does not have endowment access.

This whole thread has a lot of dumb in it. The US government has ONE measurement for poverty for DC and the 48 contiguous states. They elevate the level slightly for HI and AK. MS is way cheaper than CA, but the poverty line is the same for both places. It makes no sense. There is a good reason that home ownership in MS is among the highest in the US.
MS has a lot of poor people, but in real terms it isn't a whole lot different from other places.

The MS Delta is the poorest section of the whole country. The rest of the state is on par with the rest of the country.

Yes. They also sell Mercedes, Smarts and across the street is the Land Rover and Jag dealership. We have a "Ferrari South" in Jxn too. Also a third of all Nissans currently buzzing the roads are built just north of Jackson. CSpire wireless, formally Cellular South is based right outside Jxn and for a brief shining moment in the early 2000's the largest telecommunications company on the planet, WorldComm, was alive in Clinton just west of Jxn

What's up with the mini Washington Monument outside Jackson?

Ole Miss and Harvard have roughly the same enrollment.
Harvard's endowment is $32 Billion.
The endowment is not the end all to academics. It is usually a good indicator though.
A&M's system has 103,000 students. About $5 billion of the $7 Billion goes to A&M College Station and its true branch campuses(non-component institutions): Galveston(marine research) and Qatar(petroleum).

there's some old money floating around memphis and ole miss and jackson, but it's NOTHING like up on the east coast or places like Dallas. so i don't even know why they put that "old money" statement out there.

That's the Mary Hawkin's monument. She is the czarina of Madison. She is so controlling about building codes she made AT&T disguise their cell tower in that so she didn't have to look at it when she drives by all that she created

The delta definitely brings us down. That is where the gap between rich and poor is the greatest. Remove the delta, even though that is a hell of a lot of people, and our median income would be comparable to every other state in the southeast and be higher than South Dakota and Alaska. That is what saves Arkansas, because their population and area on that same delta is nowhere near what ours is.
The state of Mississippi heavily subsidized people to stay in places along the delta instead of letting nature dictate the population curve. In the book "Rising Tide", John Berry documents all this in detail as well as showing how the decisions of a few people 100 years ago led to the delta being in the shape it's in today. Instead of allowing the poorer population to move north like every other state did we pulled off schemes* to keep all the laborers here, in places like Greenville and Clarksdale, to make sure a few people's vision of some new south eutopia came to be.
* referring to "The Mississippi Miracle" after the great depression Mississippi raided states in the northeast promising heavy tax favortism if those companies moved their operations the Mississippi. The companies came and set up shop and, as promised, made a killing in textiles in Mississippi without paying anyhting in taxes to the state.
