Mississippi is the poorest state in the nation. Why does Ole Miss have the perception of a wealthy school when the state as a whole is poor? Is this a facade and most rich alums are from out of state or is almost all wealth in the state associated with Ole Miss?

Just use your eyes. Oxford is regarded as one of the best college towns in the country yet is in the middle of no where with only 20k people. You will see a majority of luxury cars instead of a majority if American cars. You will see gorgeous women dressed to the nines. You will guys wearing bow ties and actually tuck in their shirts (poor people don't so this). You will see one of the most gorgeous campus' in the country.

OM gets that reputation because of who they are compared to. Bama and LSU have so many side walk fans that dilute their product. I'm sure both have more elite fans and more money as a whole but we have a higher percentage of wealthy fans. State's biggest tradition is ringing farm equipment. You don't think that is going to build a superiority complex in us?

If we were compared to Texas, Rice, SMU or Baylor then we wouldn't have the reputation we have. Even though I was disappointed in the Texas fans elitism. I was expecting better.

It is hard to like OM. We suck in athletics and we are in a poor, awful state. So if you are an OM fan it is either because you were raised an OM fan or our stereotype fits you. Our stereotype is a party, rich, snobby school. Therefore we get those types of kids. They're rich and snobby because their parents are rich and snobby and then their children are rich and snobby.

I only read the OP but I guarantee you that most fans in this thread are state and LSU fans saying its just something they made up. Yeah, those two fan bases are the ones to talk to about class and elitism

So?? I'm assuming the market for farm hands and cattle drivers works in a similar manner.

Doesn't mean they support Ole Miss.

Every class I had at UMMC was taught by a OM grad and is an OM fan. Our chancellor was UMMC's dean for God's sake.

Edit: not true, what I meant is I didn't have a state grad or fan as a teacher. Southern either

Because only poor people in MS are poor. Most Mississippians are hard working middle class folks. I guarantee there are four times the amount of poor people in TX than MS has. Our population is just so tiny that statistics really stick out.

Very well put

Just seems strange that there is so much widespread generational poverty in the state, but the most well known instituiton in the state is known as a wealthy oasis.

For a small group of people to be inordinately rich, it requires an inordinate amount of people to be poor, relatively speaking. Just kind of the territory within a closed economy assuming no power cords hooked up to the printing presses.

TL;DR - Ole Miss rich, u poor.

Mississippi is the poorest and fattest state.

its small so the top 3-5% have all the money and most of them go to Ole Miss/Miss St.

totally not reflective of the rest of the state.

My inlaws are from MS and they were raised poor/lower middle class and always hated/still hate the snobby Old Mrs attitude. They are huge State Fans even though neither went to school there. I think they pull for them just to spite Old Mrs.
Many wanna be semi-well-off - middle class private school families in North LA send thier offspring to Old Mrs specificaly because of that attitude, they strive to be a part of it so they can look down on others in North LA. Biff and Bambi eventually come back to north LA to take over the family car wash or oil change shop (not that there is anything wrong with those establishments).

Nunnelee is US Representative for District 1 in Mississippi FWIW

Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker are our Senators.

Since we are name dropping, I met and talked to Rep. Steven Palazzo at the Petal/Oak Grove football game this past Thursday.

I think for Mississippi, and for Alabama to some degree, people see the masses, and they don't realize the culture that exists in the state amongst a certain group of people. Those people can go toe to toe with anyone in the country as far as experiences and education. That bleeds onto the Ole Miss campus. The liberal arts foundation that encompasses Ole Miss is a huge part of that, IMO.
