I don't think Kirby would take the Ole Miss job unless his situation changed at Bama. Kirby is 35 years old. Malzahn is 45 years old. There is a difference in what job you'll take at 35 (when you assume something better is coming soon) and at 45 (if you decide you want to be a HC).

Kirby has been given every reason to believe that he will receive strong consideration for the Bama job when Saban retires in 2017 (:inb4someonesaysheleavesbeforethen). He may not get it, but he is willing to wait another couple of years for something better than Ole Miss. It isn't as if Kirby's stock is going to drop dramatically.

ETA: Taking everything I posted into account, I know that Kirby's reps have still listened to people from Ole Miss within the past 3 weeks.

I think its going to be either Hudspeth or Leach.

That wouldnt' be bad considering there has been heated moments between he and Mullen on the sidelines in the past. He recruits the state of MS well. He would be a huge thorn to Mullen.

How much does Kirby make at Bama. I'd be willing to bet ole miss would pay him a good bit of money. OR what if he wanted to take the Mullen route?

Ole Miss Coaching Rumor
I love Bama and Auburn fans think there is no way Kirby Smart or Gus Malzahn would ever take the Ole Miss gig.

Kirby and Gus would definitely take the Ole Miss job if offered. OM is a pretty good gig. Better than MissSU or UKy. But I don't think they are the best choices. If you like what Gus has done, then get Chad Morris from Clemson. Same offensive mind, better recruiter and more experience w/ 15 years as the head coach of some of Texas's biggest high schools. He's cocky as hell, and would easily take back the state from Mullen. And I think Leach would be a good fit too.

Will get a look from UNC, which is a better job than Ole Miss IMO.

how long is his contract? a new coach at OM will get at least $2m for 5 years. (Nutt gets $2.5m). not to mention all the other perks of being the head coach of the flagship school. also, you get to be the head guy, which is what all coaches aspire to be.

Thats because UNC does have to compete with all the cheating frickers in the SEC like Ole Miss. Pay-to-play is the name of the game and it continues to be overlooked by the NCAA. Fact!

Maybe. Doesn't Nutt have a 6 million dollar buyout? We're talking about Mississippi here. Poorest state in the country and all that.

Poor state =/= poor university.
Ole Miss is pretty wealthy.

His $850K is for 3 years. Signed it earlier this year. I agree we would consider the Ole Miss job. He'd be crazy not to. My only point was that:
A) He isn't their first choice
B) He has been given reason to believe that when Saban retires in 2017 that he will receive strong consideration for the HC job at Bama

I'm not saying he wouldn't consider or take it, but for those two reasons I don't think Kirby ends up at Ole Miss

You do realize that Ole Miss cheats, too, right? I hope you aren't saying that Ole Miss is clean. I can think of a handful of kids from the past recruiting class that you should be thankful their recruitment is "overlooked by the NCAA".

Also, UNC is better because it is a state school (like Ole Miss) in a BCS conference (like Ole Miss), but it is easier to win at UNC than at Ole Miss.

I agree with all of this but unc is a basketball school. Not that, that makes it a worse job than ole miss.

i agree that he'll probably remain at Alabama even though he'll get considered from a lot of programs. but he needs to talk to Muschamp about being a coach in waiting, or even Bill Oliver about a promise from the AD to replace the HC when he retires. Kirby will leave well before Saban retires.

And Kirby's stock will be pegged to Muschamp's performance at UF, as a young defensive coordinator. It a lot harder to get a HC from being a DC because defense doesn't have the sex appeal, but defensive-minded head coaches are some of the best.

Really? Mark over Kirby and Leach? I mean I think he would be the best hire of the three, but am surprised that Ole Miss would think that.

ETA: One of the Ole Miss posters mentioned Kevin Sumlin, who I think would be a great hire for OM as well.
