Plenty of players wear the same numbers, it's because you cant wear the same number and play the same position.

Im assuming the rule is in place to help defenses pick formations/schemes. When they see #5 come into the game they substitute accordingly. When there are 2 ppl wearing #5 that can pose an issue. I agree it's not a huge deal but I see why they have the rule

Probably. Don't know how that affected Notre Dame when Michigan busted out those throwbacks several years ago where everyone had that huge "M" on their jersey front. Seems like that could be just as, if not more confusing.
