let's get serious, Georgia Tech is still the top academic institution in Georgia.

I never said they didn't have great academics. Everyone knows they do. I'm just saying the days where it was tech being at the top like they are now, then a huuuuuuuuuuuuge gap, then UGA where it was just every redneck or football fan who wanted to go there could get in are gone. You said it, HOPE has been a wonderful thing. Have you seen the admissions requirements now? tech is a very good school, but UGA isn't THAT far behind. And in many areas is better. The whole "well you're gonna work for us one day lol" insult just doesn't have the same sting (no pun intended I swear) that it used to.

If they can ever get that clown running the triple option out of there, they'd have a perennial ACC contender.

What about the 100+ years that they played football before 2008? Tech will always be 2nd (at best) rate at football. In general I mean, because it's a given they'll always be second fiddle in the state.

I remember the UGA-GT games in the 90's... Great games

And we were led by Goff and Donnan, during one of the worst decades in our history. Several losing seasons. Yet we still reeled off 7 in a row on them.

No, it wouldn't.

with GA Southern moving up to FBS, I expect them to take some recruits from Paul Johnson since both run the option

Wow, an 8 page thread on Georgia Tech and I missed it. I guess I could make a bunch of lame jokes about having to work and not having all the free time that the UGA fans have to post, but I'll refrain. I am able to clear up a few things stated so far -

quote:

It's mainly their fans...most of which never went to Tech. They are very rabid

There is no such thing as a Georgia Tech fan that did not go to school there. In fact, most of the people that did go to school there don't follow them. When I was in school, I could wake up right before the game and go down to the stadium and get a row to myself. I wish it were different, because I love college football.

I like that they use the true gold, and not the Green Bay "Yellow/gold

I wish we were consistent. One of my complaints about our sports are that we are all over the map when it comes to colors. While the official colors are old gold and white, you see a lot of yellowish gold Georgia Tech items. For a while we wore gold and black. You also see old gold, white, and navy blue. There is historical use of navy blue and I am fine with that. I just hate the 3 or 4 different colors of gold you see.

I hope not because I am a Project Manager. My degree is in mechanical engineering, but most of my career has been in supervisory or management roles.

Tech fans would rather see UGA fail than their own team succeed

Not true, since Tech hasn't had overwhelming success in football in a while, it is just natural to want to see your neighbor not do well either. Since Tech is in a different conference, most of the fans pull against other ACC teams to jockey for position.

As far as other things stated about the fan basis, the comments about Georgia Tech being a smaller school and having mostly out of state students are true. It is more difficult to convert out of state students to big football fans when your team has been pretty mediocre lately. An interesting note though, my daughter started the University of Alabama this year and 50% of the freshman class is from out of state.

No, not really. However, if we can ever go several years in a row doing well, I think we can grow the fan base. Last year was an important step in winning our bowl game. We had quite a bad streak of getting blown out in recent bowl games.

That is an interesting point about Alabama, I know a lot of students that could not get into UGA this year , but went to Alabama. But what's also interesting is that it's 50%. I know UA has been steadily moving up the Academic standings, and I wonder if they are having the same issue with alot of their state students not able to get in.

I saw somewhere that the early acceptance at UGA this past year was not below 4.0 gpa and 1400 math-verbal.

I believe it, UGA was hard to get into even a decade ago when I was graduating high school. HOPE has really helped all the four-year schools in the state.

GT's starting salaries are higher than Stanford, UVA, Nortwestern and every other BCS school. Recent Wall Street Journal article.

I think that may be a common theme at Alabama for out of state applicants. My daughter had good grades, but I get the impression that the criteria is harder for in state applicants. Like half the freshman class, we are paying out of state tuition. That is a lot of additional income for the school. Would you sell a car to your brother for half the price as what you could get selling it to a stranger? Plus, bringing in out of state students means more college educated people moving to the state and finding jobs there.

You see...the difference is this:

We KNOW and admit that this is embarrassing. A GT student would watch that and say,

At the risk of being banned, I am PRETTY much the same way. I am a Ga. fan first, SEC fan second and Georgia schools third.

I absolutely without hesitation and reservation HATE Southern Cal, Notre Dame and Miami, though.

No. Actually he was right. Almost all of the Tech fans I know have told me they would rather Ga. lose than Tech win if they had to choose.

Area wise it is, or at least it was. They also have more deer on campus than students. I used to drive up the long entry way early in the mornings and it was not unusual to have at least one deer run across the road and jump the fences in front of me.
