Why not just promote Paul Petrino, let him run the offense, see if he has what it takes to be a head coach, and save yourself $850,000 in the process?
` he's running the offense now. he's just not running the team.

the only real question mark about Paul is can he call plays without bobby there. if he can answer that the gig is his.

but as i stated, you aren't committing to him.

Long put himself to have ALL his options open come December. that's why it's so brilliant.

Honestly it will be more of the current staffs Talent. John L was on the staf that recruited all of these players. SO were most of the assistants that remain. We just hired two young up and comers who were known for their recruiting at Ohio State. If for some reason he does have an amazing season and gets to stay I don;t think I could be mad about that. I like the staff we have in place and think they will do a good job.

Making the decision to keep the staff, while good for the short term, may be the worst decision Long made.

What high profile coach you might hire next year is going to come in and agree to keep the current staff?

How can your current staff recruit effectively knowing this is probably a one and done?

This isn't that bad of a hire considering it's on an interim basis. Naming an interim was the right move anyway and John L will keep the current staff in place for this season. If he was hired as the permanent, then I would be fricking pissed.

Lets be honest as well, this guy isnt going to win 9-10 games.

tOSU went 6-6 with exponentially more talent and an easier conference.

You're fricking retarded.

You've GOT to be kidding me. If you're not convinced by now that Paul Petrino will NOT be the next coach at Arkansas, you never will be.

If PP was a legit candidate, this would have been the absolute PERFECT time for an audition. It doesn't get better than this. You don't let someone be an OC for a year and call that an audition for HC. You call it an audition for OC.

Exactly. Our fan base is concerned with 2012 and ONLY 2012, evidently.

I dont care what anyone says.im 100% behind John L Smith.I'll play for him any day of that week because hes a good man and coach 14-0 or 0-14

Love you Knile but hate you feel this way. We don't want to go 0-14. This is about winning a NC, not turning in to a Nutt coached team again. Glad they kids like him, but 10-2 would be a disappointment to me this season after the expectations.

Nah, if people would be smart and think about it...it makes perfect sense if you're only concerned about 2012 and have desire to sign a decent recruiting class in 2013 or 2014.

FTFY

Do you want to make a rush so-so hire or do you want the best options in December?

Most relevant anticipated season in Razorback history EVER!! So hell yah. The future matters too, but we were going to take a hit the next couple of years anyway.

There's nothing brilliant about this in my opinion.

Someone will have to explain to me why it's a good move to waste a year letting Paul Petrino serve as OC and then promote him to head coach? Why not just promote him this year and see if he can handle the responsibilities of a head coach? Instead, you're going to simplify his burden and just hope he can handle the duties next year instead of actually finding out this year? That's nonsense.

Make him interim coach now and if he does well, promote him and you know he can handle the head coaching responsibilities. If not, you still have all these alleged "options" that you claim Long brilliantly provided himself. He can cut bait with Petrino and go hire McGee if he wants.

But why waste $850,000 hiring a figure head and hurt your recruiting in an effort to provide an "audition" to two guys when you could give one the chance right now and still have an opportunity with the other after the year?

Yeah, but, you need to blame Petrino for this. This year was wasted the minute he put the cycle down.

Because he is never going to get that chance imo.
