Only until December though, the only way he stays is if he wins the SEC, which in that instance no one in the state of Arkansas would want to break up this staff.

That just screams Larry Coker (but with a lot less talent).

Edited to elaborate: by that, I mean sticking with someone who has only proven to be successful with someone else's players and coaches. So essentially Arkansas will have hired someone most of their fans only found acceptable because it was on an interim basis.

Or people are amazed that of all the assistants you could pick from you went with the "face slapping" funny hire.

Yes he will. Like I said in another thread, this is it for him. He's gonna make more in 10 mths than he would in multiple years at Weber State...and he won't have to do a whole lot for it.

He's doing this and hanging it up.

Not like he could go back to Weber. LOL.

he pulled a bobby on them.

Honestly it will be more of the current staffs Talent. John L was on the staf that recruited all of these players. SO were most of the assistants that remain. We just hired two young up and comers who were known for their recruiting at Ohio State. If for some reason he does have an amazing season and gets to stay I don;t think I could be mad about that. I like the staff we have in place and think they will do a good job.

Ok silver lining.

Last season I voiced that I wanted 3 coaching changes.
1) Wily gone and far, far away from the Ozarks. His house went on the market in September. I knew CBP had already made this decision.

2) Upgrade at LB coach, 4 years of not wrapping up and just hitting a guy down instead of tackling got old real quick.

3) New Special Teams coach, I mentioned I'd like JLS to become a recruiting guru. All the recruits talk about loving the old guy, the players obviously love him. I wanted JLS to become a door opener or take over the HS relations to glad hand coaches and make the road smoother for the chippy CBP and bad press magnet that he was/is.

If we stipulated keep the staff together, JLS is the perfect guy. He can sell the university no matter who the coach is, he can mend fences, and hopefully he can build new bridges and give us a happier image from tBeacon.

Cheer up Hogs-we said the same things about Frank Haith and it turned out well. Just hope you don't get Mike Anderson instead

Nah, if people would be smart and think about it...it makes perfect sense if you're only concerned about 2012 and have desire to sign a decent recruiting class in 2013 or 2014.

this was absoutly the best thing that long could have done. anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know the program or is an idiot.

let's assume the ovbious, gruden, patterson or peterson weren't walking through that door and even if they were they weren't in april.

Arkansas wants to keep this style of offense very badly. We realize that in the state that we are in with the resources that we have, the way we play now is our best shot. Therefore what he is basically doing is allowing Paul Petrino and Garrick McGee to adution for the job; both get a year from under Bobby to run the show. If one of them shows out, if the offense this year at arknasas does not skip a beat Paul Petrino will be the coach.

The reason why it's so brilliant is because he was able to get give both an audition without committing to either of them. What if he brings in Garrick and he stinks up the joint and Paul leaves and goes to... Iowa or somewhere and has a top 10 offense? what if he promotes paul and garrick is killing it at UAB? By bringing in Smith, who won't touch anything, he is bringing in someone who has coached as a head coach for a decade and a half and will allow for Paul to run the show and Allow Garrick his 1 year audition to be the big man down in UAB. If neither deliver you go get you a coach.

Recruiting will suck this year but recruiting didn't get started every year under nutt until december anyway.

I suppose it's safe to say JLSmith has no aspirations beyond the 2012 season. The current staff gets to stay in place, if they choose....

Why not just promote Paul Petrino, let him run the offense, see if he has what it takes to be a head coach, and save yourself $850,000 in the process?

smith has coached with 8 of the 9 coaches on the staff. he mentored both petrinos at utah state and L'ville.

for this particular situation this was a home run in my opinion.

given the very shitty circumstances long did the best he could do. He's basically given mcgee and petrino a 1 year audition for the gig.

That is how it works with all coaches who are about to get fired. The new coach will come in and try to salvage a decent class late. Bobby's first class that consisted of Tyler Wilson, Joe Adams, Jarius Wright, Greg Childs, Chris Gragg, etc turned out pretty good, and he only had a few months to salvage it. Recruiting for this year will take some hit but not huge. It all depends on the new coach.

Ummm its a little different when you are salvaging a class when you actually have a contract for multiple years. Not mention Petrino is a proven successful college HC even before Arkansas.

When you try to tell kids and their parents to come play for them, yet you have an interim tag on, you're fricked. Its the easiest thing to negative recruit against. Basically the same as keeping a lame duck coach.

Lets be honest as well, this guy isnt going to win 9-10 games.

tOSU went 6-6 with exponentially more talent and an easier conference.
