Number of times each SEC school has been #1 in NCAA's list of champions

It is amazing to note that 12 of 14 schools have been selected #1 at least one time by one or more polls, etc., since 1869! No other conference can match this!
Due to the lack of an official NCAA title, determining the nation's top college football team has often engendered controversy. A championship team is independently declared by multiple individuals and organizations, often referred to as "selectors". These choices are not always unanimous.
Keep in mind that there are multiple champions selected for the same year due to the various selectors.
"Consensus" champions are those in which the majority of the selectors decided on a champion. There is no designation in the following list as to who the consensus champions are.
Not all schools decide to "claim" all their designated #1 titles. For example: Alabama is listed as #1 21 times by the NCAA; however, Alabama has chosen to claim only 17 of those (I'm as surprised as you are that they didn't decide to grab'em all! -- just kidding).
Many schools decide to claim a title even though the consensus champion is another school. The NCAA recognizes the right of any school that is voted #1 to self-recognize themselves as the champion if they so wish. That's one of the reasons why you'll see some schools claim a title in which they were voted #1, but the overall consensus was another school. It's also a reason that ultimately led to the creation of the BCS and then what we have today, the CFP.
It is up to the individual athletic departments of each school to decide whether or not to claim the titles they have listed with the NCAA.
I didn't realize until researching this info that in 2016, although Clemson defeated Alabama for the CFP that year, that Alabama is also listed as #1 by three NCAA-recognized poll selectors. Also, Central Florida is listed as a champion for 2017, although Alabama won the CFP that year. As we all know, Central Florida has laid claim to being the national champion for 2017, and they have that right since one of the NCAA-recognized selectors chose UCF as #1 that year.
Here are each SEC schools listed in alphabetical order and the number of NCAA-recognized championships attributed to each and the years they were chosen #1:
ALABAMA - 21 (1925,'30,'34,'41'45,'61'64,'65,'66,'73,'75,'77,'78,'79,'92, 2009,'11'12,'15,'16,'17)
ARKANSAS - 2 (1964,'77)

"National Championships" are nonsense, IMO, always have been, always will. There are far, far, far too many 1A teams playing far, far, far too few games against each other for so-called "NCs" to have any intrinsic worth.
That said, NCs do have practical value so long as people put stock in them, so I think it's wise of any school to claim as many as they can.
"NCs" can lead to better recruiting, better coaching, better play, more interest, better attendance, etc. etc.

We almost became #1 in 1984. We were #2 and the #1 had just lost, but we ended up losing that week as well

SCar had some really good teams in the early '80's (George Rogers, remember him?)

The national title has been decided a few ways since the beginning
Winner of the rose bowl
Ap and upi
Bowl coalition poll
Bcs
Cfp
If it wasn't recognized by these, which have been the legit ways since the beginning, meh.
Although we got the royal screw job in 66,75 and 77. Somebody looks like they had some sense.

IMO....SEC teams that have a legit claim to a NC that isn’t necessarily recognized on a national scale but has validity:
1938 Tennessee
1950 Tennessee
1960 Missouri
1966 Alabama
1983 Auburn
1984 Florida
1938 Tennessee
1950 Tennessee
1960 Missouri
1966 Alabama
1983 Auburn
1984 Florida

The SEC didn't exist until about 1933 and there were 12 teams, including Ga Tech, Tulane and Suwanee. So championships before 1933 were not won by SEC teams persay.
Also jawja's infamous "crowns during WW2 are completely bogus...since all the other SEC teams sent football players to fight in the war and jawja kept their players in the ROTC so they could win games...how proud you must be Rod..your team kept players on campus while other schools had players killed during combat.
THIS is why Spurrier hated jawja btw, when he arrived on campus at UF in 1963 he was told by older Gators what jawja had done.

You still haven't added 1926 to Alabama's total. Should be 22.

They never claimed that "title" until over 40 years later.

Seems a bit ingenious.
#1) SEC had 13 teams in 1932 and Sewanee dropped out with the onset of WWII
#2) By your logic the PAC should not claim PCC data and B1G should not claim Western Conference data. SIAA to SoCon to SEC, the roots are there to claim prior to the SEC.
