Given that Alabama has won 5 NC since 2009, it is really no big deal. Now if Alabama only played in a NC game every decade or so, then it might be.

If you are talking about Alabama, Alabama only counts NC won after WWII that were won in the major polls (AP/UPI/BCS/CFP)
Before WWII Alabama counts those won using a different system, that other schools use as well (USCw, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc.)
Now If Alabama counted all the national titles they could claim 30.
But Alabama is humble and only claims 17

LSU fans, who are tied with us for total natty's should be able to claim 30-40 or so if they are middle aged, possibly more.
Florida fans, even if they are reasonable young, will be right up there since they are sitting at 40 right now all time.
Bottom line the SEC can claim a LOT of national titles.
