How can one team have a different criteria than everyone else next year? This whole playoff system is broken.

Imagine the embarrassment of ND losing that game. They can't afford that after the full court press they just attempted on the playoff committee.
They just learned the hard way that their strategy of scheduling 2 difficult games per year, at worst going 10-2, and being guaranteed a playoff berth isn't going to work.
They are reeling in South Bend. They have no plan from here. No way they can afford to lose to a bunch of Mormons.
I expect an ecumenical council called by the American Pope in the near future.

The correct thing to do is to accept the bowl game and beat the team to prove you belong.
