When Notre Dame plays Alabama in the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 7, the most famous Catholic university will battle the most famous Catholic coach.

"Being a Catholic kid growing up, I always watched Notre Dame and everybody in my family was interested in what Notre Dame did," Alabama Coach Nick Saban said.

Saban attends Mass at St. Francis of Assisi University Parish in Tuscaloosa, less than two blocks from the Crimson Tide football practice fields.

"He goes to church every Sunday," said Bishop Robert J. Baker, head of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham.

quote:

Construction is under way on a large new sanctuary for the campus church. Saban and his wife, Terry, who just celebrated their 41st anniversary on Dec. 18, helped raise money for the multi-million-dollar project.

Baker said that when the congregation moves into the new building next year, the current sanctuary will be renovated into a student social hall.

"That'll be made into the Saban Center, in his honor," Baker said.

The coach may never be known as St. Nick, but at least he'll have a church named after him.

Saban has long been known for having a Mass before every game. His pastor, the Rev. Gerald Holloway, serves as team chaplain and leads the team in reciting the Lord's prayer, or "Our Father," before and after games.

Now that Saban is trying to persuade America that Catholics should pull for Bama, does this mean it's no longer Pachyderms vs. Pedophiles?

ETA: Maybe this is a good sign for Bama. Bear was 0-4 against Notre Dame. With a Catholic Yankee at the helm, Bama may finally beat the Domers.

What a lame comment. Going to church every Sunday doesn't mean shite.

When I went to Catholic school in Anniston, AL as an elementary student, Father Holloway was one of several pastors who would say mass on Wednesday mornings when our own pastor - Father Richard Donohoe - was missing in action.

They're playing Notre Dame. Saban explained it pretty well by explaining what Notre Dame football meant to him growing up Catholic at the time he did. I guess that means nothing to people who weren't alive prior to 1980 or don't remember when Notre Dame football was last relevant.

And Saban has never been shy about trying to give fans, boosters, recruits, etc. a reason to like him. Politicking is what he does.

Upon further reflection this makes a lot of sense.

Napoleon was a Catholic so it only makes sense that the Nicktator is Catholic.

Napoleon was an atheist.

Not only that, but his anti-clerical and religious policies while he was emperor make it clear he was no friend of the Catholic Church.

Catholics don't go to "church". We go to "mass".

I am now pulling for Saban and the Tide against Notre Dame.

Alabama's already beaten the domers.

Call up Steve Beuerlein. He can tell you about the game if he's recovered from the concussion Cornelius Bennett gave him.
