NFL playoffs are proof college playoff needs to expand.

The NFL consistently produces high quality semifinal and final games because pretenders get weeded out in wild card and divisional rounds.

If college expanded to 8 or 12 teams we could weed out the Notre Dame type teams quickly. The semifinal college games have been nearly unwatchable to the average fan. Average semifinal victory has been 21 points since the 4 team playoffs started.

So, more games are needed to include the teams that need to be weeded out?

The exact opposite of what you just said is true.

There isn’t enough parity in College Football to justify an expansion. The talent disparity between the first place and 10th place NFL teams is the difference in a couple of key players. In college it’s a difference of entire recruiting classes.

(1)

This isn't true

(2)

College doesn't have the same kind of parity at all.

I think 8 teams would be fine and will happen, but your logic is flawed.

Absolutely. The same thing happens in the NCAA tournament. A college football playoff will bigger.

An absolutely nonsensical comparison.

How do you know this will be permanent? So the dynamics will absolutely never change over time?

If we went by the same % of teams making the playoffs... 57 college teams would make the playoffs

I get what you are saying, but at least with an expanded playoff you won't have teams automatically qualifying for the semifinals without ever facing a quality opponent. A larger playoff forces you to both be a great team and be playing at your best to make it to the semifinals.

Be my guest if you guys want to accept the current format that essentially gives the other conferences auto-semifinal berths if they can produce a 1 loss or better team despite hardly any competition.

This is why the B10/P12/ACC are voting against the expansion. They don't want their conference champs losing in the first round to 3rd or 4th place SEC teams.

You do know NFL teams are a mixture of several college teams/conferences.

WELL the 12 team playoff was agreed to and set to be announced, then Aggie leaked that OU and TexASS were joining the SEC. the big Ten got scared and said no playoff the SEC is trying to put one over on us.....

Aggies were afraid of OU and TexASS and thought leaking it would kill it. All it did was kill the agreement for the expanded playoff...

Riiiiiight.

The NFL expanded playoffs this year produced the absolutely astounding wild card round this year, which was chock-full of competitive games with teams that were DEFINITELY play-off worthy.

Exactly. NFL and College parity levels do not come close to comparing. NFL has it built in. So does cfb but it seems to be implemented by clowns.

I am a fan of 8 teams in the playoffs as well.

There have been several times where teams 5-8 probably could have made the CFB Championship game, Wisconsin in 17, TCU in 14, Iowa in 15, UCF IN 17.

Not saying they would have won the championship, but they could have made it interesting in the quarter and semi final games.

OR....hear me out now....we could weed them out by not letting them into a 4 team playoff. Radical, huh?

You do know that the wild card games are a part of the playoffs, right?

So, your solution to weeding weak teams out of the playoffs is to expand the playoffs so they can get beaten in an early round?

The NFL is on a MUCH more even playing field than college football is, and the talent disparity of the teams being fairly negligent. In college, it's rare you even see a competitive semi-final game in the current format. And there's really nothing you can do to really address the talent gaps. The NFL is able to do this with salary caps and having a draft.

Terrible comparison. The inherent variance in the sport of basketball creates a much greater likelihood of upsets, just like with baseball. The NCAA basketball tournament is actually a horrible format to determine a champion. There's a reason the NBA plays best of 7 series in each round of their playoffs rather than having a single elimination tournament.
