There used to be a meaningful distinction between college sports and minor league baseball games.

The latter was always combined with lots of ads and promotions and "contests" and hokey shite because it didn't really matter or mean anything to anyone.

College football games used to seem almost like rituals, holidays, ecstatic worship services...

Now they're just like everything else.

Is that how you have believed this whole thing would work? Why are you calling people idiots when you have no idea what is going on?

How much do you think a female discuss thrower at LSU might make.

Zero. Fair market. Same as the male discus thrower. It's not an equality issue.

I'm not saying it isn't. I'm saying that it creates a huge gap between maybe 10% of the athletes on campus and the rest.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Democrats are pushing this, given how adamantly they support Title IX. Don't expect to see female athletes rallying around this.

You can talk about "fair market value" all you want, but we all know that as long as Title IX exists in college sports, the concept of fair market value doesn't exist.

It's not this pure amateur sport that people talk about. You want that? Watch intramural sports.

Amateur sports don't turn billions in profits.

It is because they don't want to govern themselves, only others. fricking hypocrites.

They'd be hard pressed to enforce that unless the university actually was paying. Try forcing Ed Jones Subaru to endorse volleyball.

So imma assuming Athletic Departments who fund scholarships, Booster organizations like Iptay, Bulldog club, TAF etc who take in major bucks and donations for seating priorities and funding non revenue sports will lose their tax exempt status.

Will players then hafta declare monies recieved in endorsements, their benefits from scholarships, room & board, tutoring, medical services etc. as taxable income?

I didn't say they could enforce it or would even try. I didn't say that at all.

What I said is that I'm shocked that Democrats in Congress...who have long been on the forefront of supporting and promoting Title IX...are now advocating a system where a few male athletes can make thousands...even tens of thousands...of dollars, while females basically will make nothing.

If you don’t think it could get worse than it is, just wait. You think it’s bad now, that the same big names get the big players without paying them too? Saban reels in top classes year in and year out as it is, if you don’t think he’ll outdo everybody even more when he gets to add all the endorsements he’ll be able to guarantee them, you’re fooling yourself. This will only make it more top heavy.

All we need is a couple of Senators from the hotbeds of college football,Connecticut and Massachusetts, telling the rest of the country how college football should operate.

Well no take would shock me at this point. I'm just a log truck driver and I'm sure someone out there thinks they're entitled to what I make.

So you are saying Bama football players are not getting paid something on the side right now?

I don't know how colleges and NCAA are going to be able to manage this.

Easy.

Get rid of the athletic scholarship. Anyone wanting to play must go through the same enrollment and acceptance hoops as any other student and must meet the institution's academic standards like every other student. The NCAA quits worrying about the money side entirely and focuses on just the academic side. Recruiting becomes about identifying kids that are good players and can get into school.

Unlike now, kids will for the most part be juniors or seniors before they become famous enough to get paid for endorsements or such because there won't be any more 5* recruits but if they do, good for them.

Of course, a lot of kids won't ever get the chance to go to college but they won't be 'exploited' anymore.

ETA - if football players aren't getting scholarships then girl's lacross players aren't getting them either and Title IX becomes almost meaningless.

It would make it true amateur athletics. Also it would suck to watch.

Idgaf how it shakes out as long as the sport remains as awesome as it is in modern times.

It's such a long topic of conversation.... just please don't hurt the sport. Period.
