Wasn't Dez more in tune with Dareus' problem? I thought Dez accepted money from an agent or someone then actually lied to the NCAA about doing so and thats what got him booted. AJ sold his own property, it just happened to be a guy that may or may not be related to agents via other players. I think any player has a right to sell their own property to whoever they want, but AJ should've known better than to sell it at all per NCAA rules

AJ directly profited from his transgressions

By selling his own personal property, and he has since given the money back. It'd be no different than if he sold a calculator on ebay. He sold something he personally owned.

Then the NCAA gave us the death penalty and said we couldn't play football...but we just said "F you" and kept playing anyway? We still played the schedule and practiced and everything.

I'd imagine you'd have a tough time finding a school that was willing to play Georgia.

So the whole AJ thing was uncovered when the NCAA was looking at AJ's phone records and they saw the call between Hawkins and AJ. Then AJ came clean about everything. I don't know how all that went down, but going through a kids phone records seems a little overboard.

I wouldn't look for his appeal to go well if he lied to the NCAA. I think he better just prepare to sit for 4 games.

NCAA really has some power
I was just thinking about this, and I know it's never going to happen but bare with me. What would happen if a school just didn't GAS what the NCAA said? Taking this situation as an example, let's say we just started playing AJ anyway. The NCAA would end up saying "AJ Green is ineligible, he can't play", and then we said WGAF and kept playing him anyway. Then at the end of the year we'd have to "vacate" the games. But I mean...what does someone saying that into a microphone and signing some piece of paper mean? The games were still played. So let's say they took scholarships away or something like that, and we said "F off" and still gave as many scholarships as we wanted. Then the NCAA gave us the death penalty and said we couldn't play football...but we just said "F you" and kept playing anyway? We still played the schedule and practiced and everything.

They could join the NAIA and i am sure it would not affect the school at all.

True, but once again the NCAA says you cannot sell your personal property. Stupid rule but a rule nonetheless.

Why would AU, or UF, or Tech play a team that was not a memeber of the NCAA? It would hurt their SOS and hinder their chances for titles. UGA would basically be KSU.

it's a little big brother to me. the ncaa is a sanctioning body and they make up the rules as they go along

Everyone believes this until it happens to Alabama.

I'm pretty sure it has do do with the fact that it was an item given to him by the university because he is an athlete. If it was his stereo he payed for and sold it a fair market value i don't think this would be an issue.

In this situation, what could the NCAA actually do to stop all that? If a team just said "we're doing what we want and you can't stop us", what could the NCAA REALLY do to stop them?

They would tell all the teams on your schedule not to play you, so you couldn't just ignore the NCAA and keep playing. The other teams on your schedule would have WAY more incentive to take you off their schedule than to follow suit and tell the NCAA to frick off.

In theory, all the schools could tell the NCAA to GTFO, but it's not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

For a program like UGA, leaving the NCAA would be like putting a gun in your mouth and pulling the trigger.

could the NCAA suspend you for not giving up phone records?
