Years ago Nate Oats started dating Alexa when she was a staff member, but then she left for a job with the Dallas Mavericks.
Her and Oats got married about a month ago and now she has been rehired by Bama.

I'm not trying to pull any kind of gotcha or anything but is it normal to hire a spouse to work in the same athletic department? Genuinely asking, for all I know it could be done everywhere.

No, I don't think it's normal under any circumstances
As a Bama fan, I think it's truly bizarre. Although, she does have experience previously working with Bama and now has some NBA experience, so I imagine she's at least somewhat qualified.
