Wouldn't necessarily call it my favorite, but it's from the only time I saw him in person -- 1975 when he was Head Coach at East Carolina.

I was a member of the UNC team then and we lost to ECU that year. After the game ended, Pat Dye walked past me on his way to shake hands with Coach Dooley.

As he walked by I said, "good game, Coach". He looked at me and said, "damn right it was a good game! We kicked ya'll's arse!"

Well, I don't think anyone has ever allowed the words "Pat Dye" and "class" to collide in the same sentence before.

Can you imagine anyone ever having the success or generating such a coaching tree as Coach Bryant in this day and age?

No because if Bryant was coaching in college football of today he would have been run off after his 1969 and 1970 records.

Well, he did learn how to behave like a coach and how to recruit from the master himself.

Actually, Brynt was well known in his own day for showing class to an opponent when he won and lost.

Yeah, that whole deal arose out of Coach Bryant's comment that his fear of failure was based upon him being forced to be "behind a flatulent mule pulling a plow".

Lets go into into this, shall we? Bryant ribbed Auburn in newspaper saying if he couldnt beat them he miht as well go back to plowing. When he got on the field, the Auburn fans started chanting "plow bear plow" ie "we're going to beat you, bear." Then, he started to plow. A joke. Did you REALLY think he just randomly started acting like he was plowing, for no apparent reason? REALLY?

I think I'd have thought of a better way to state that sentence and question.

The quote and other stuff on Coach Dye can be found at THIS LINK.

Does it have his quote he made about Prop 48 signings in 1989 after he had fewer than Alabama did for the first time since Prop 48 was implemented. Alabama had 8 and Auburn had 5 that year. But Dye reminded the media how many Alabama REALLY had.

"They really had 9. Don't forget that kid who drowned." 'Bama had a signee from around Troy drown that summer.
