he probably should have figured that out before the kid was graduating in 16 days

eh, it's not like the kid doesn't have an other major offers. People are acting like the kid signed his letter of intent, showed up to campus to start practice, and was told to kick rocks.

Its kind of hard to get back into recruiting when you told schools thanks but no thanks for months and now you only have like 2 months to re engage

He could start by telling the kid to his face instead of relaying the message through the coach.

Is Mullen allowed to call a recruits phone? I assumed that was a violation.

he is not the first and won't be the last recruit asked to grey shirt at the last minute. it happens all the time. for instance, elliot porter, LSU's starting center, was asked to grey shirt days before signing day. He ended up going to Kentucky and transferred back to LSU. It's just the nature of recruiting. Coaches always offer more kids than they have room for. If they get to the point where they don't have enough scholarships to cover all of their commits, they have to do something about it. It's not like Mullen told the kid he didn't want him at all.

Yep.

John Parker Wilson was asked to greyshirt late in the process. He started for 3 years.

Bradley Bozeman was asked to greyshirt a few months before signing day. He has started 2-3 games and will start for at least 2 years on the OL.

Darius Philon was asked to greyshirt the day before signing day (well documented). If he had, he would be in our DL rotation. Instead, he is going to be an all-SEC DL at Arkansas.

98% of the time these kids end up going places that work out just fine. The phony outrage over it is ridiculous.

John Boy Walton, next to Freddie Kitchens, one of my favorite AlaBama QBs, of all time.

Why, because those are the only 2 Alabama QB's you guys have beaten in the last 50 years?

One time at church Mullen had the NCAA rule book inside the bible. What a kook.

texas is the most overrated state when it comes to highly ranked talent. The best team in Texas #5 TCU has no were near the best players in state to commit to them. You don't need prima donna players to win

The state of Texas has 12 FBS schools to support plus Oklahoma/Okie Light/Arky/LSU etc all coming in to get as much talent as they can.

And maybe over there in the deep south where high school kids kinda expect to get pissed on by the local college coaches that is fine.

Here in Texas, top recruits are major local celebrities and coaches love to live vicariously through that fame. If you dump a kid last minute you didn't just piss on him, you pissed on that coach, that community and that area.

It seems stupid but it matters.

A HS coach can't stop a college from recruiting someone but they can "create" obstacles to make like difficult.

Ask Dennis Francione.

Can you elaborate? I ask out of curiosity.

I used to work for a local TV news station in East Texas when Fran was A&M's coach. He is the only HC I ever Texas HS coaches openly attack w/o prompting. This was from coaches at schools 3A-5A all across the region.

That's the same everywhere (well everywhere that has deep rooted football and local programs), and definitely true in the Deep South.

However, most of the time it is handled well and everyone understands the situation. When it isn't is when it blows up.
