Also, MSU's Elgton Jenkins wins the 2018 Kent Hull Trophy for Mississippi's best college offensive lineman.

The Conerly is selected by the panel of statewide media representatives that counts for 90 percent and by fan voting that counts for 10 percent of the award.

Simmons led the fan voting with 13,894 votes. Ole Miss junior wide receiver A.J. Brown, the 2017 Conerly winner, finished second with 9,671 votes and Jackson State place kicker and punter Christian Jacquemin was third with 8,561 votes.

The top four overall vote getters were Simmons, Brown, Alcorn State quarterback Noah Johnson and Southern Miss wide receiver Quez Watkins.

Simmons became seventh Mississippi State player to win the Conerly for the eighth time, joining quarterback Dak Prescott (2014 and 2015), offensive guard Gabe Jackson (2013), White (2010), running back Anthony Dixon (2009), running back Jerious Norwood (2005) and running back J.J. Johnson (1998).

Mississippi State first-year coach Joe Moorhead said Simmons exceeded his expectations athletically and academically.

"He's one of the most dominating players in college football," Moorhead said. "He checks all the boxes of being a student-athlete."

Also honored Thursday night was Mississippi State senior center Elgton Jenkins, who was named the winner of the sixth annual Entergy/Kent Hull Trophy as the top collegiate offensive lineman in Mississippi.

“I’m honored to receive this award in honor of Kent Hull,” Jenkins said.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Clarksdale native started as a redshirt freshman in 2015 at left guard blocking for then-MSU quarterback Dak Prescott. He then switched to center where he has teamed with QB Nick Fitzgerald.
