Recruiting base/history of top recruits; placement in NFL; the number of highly successful(now and historical) teams that are based in the state; tradition of Texas high school football; etc. Really just stuff like that since the OP didn't define his criteria.

Same reasons I picked Florida for the last 25 years with the boom of recruiting and the successes of Miami; FSU; and Fla. in that period.

If it's college football, you'll have a difficult time convincing me it's anyone other than the state of Alabama... when factoring in high school, college, and NFL it's Texas... hands down.

Alabama ranks somewhere around 25th nationally in population and supports two of the top 15 winningest programs in college football history (Alabama 6th & Auburn 13th). On any given Saturday, there could be as many as 178,000 people watching college football in the state of Alabama (that number will go up as Bryant Denny expands in 2010).

Thats what makes it such a broad question. Are we only talking about the success that the colleges in a certain state have had in football, are we talking about NFL success from players from those states? Hell the question is so open we could pick Texas and add in the success the Cowboys have had + the high school and college success.

... we have our faults as a state, but we love our college football. The numbers speak for themselves.

Another statistic

Total Conference Championships:

Auburn 6 SEC Titles (13 total)
Alabama 22 SEC Titles (26 total)

The state has a combined 39 conference titles in approximately 115 seasons.

And that's just SEC championships. I know Alabama had four Southern Conference championships as well and I believe Auburn had 6 or 7.

Texas
Ohio

This is considering not only college football, but high school and NFL. Also, history helps here as well. Many of us are guilty of forgetting Ohio in this equation

Yeah and some of those faults are due to the fact that football is over-emphasized.......

When a state ranks near the bottom in everything but a sport, there is something wrong with its sense of priorities, IMO

And another thing--all this backslapping is silly in another way....I mean, the only reason Southern states produce more talent is because such a high proportion of the population is black.....it really has little to do with any particular expertise on the part of anybody.....

I don't disagree with anything you said, but this thread wasn't about population demographics or Alabama's misguided priorities, it was about the most successful football state.

IMO, either get on topic or start another one.

NJ, got tired of being laughed at on the poli board? Explain how emphasizing football de-ephasizes other things. I'm waiting.

Again, how does being good in football hinder other things?

So blacks are inherently better at something? Let's take the flipside to that and say that the only reason northern states are better at Alabama in industry is becuase they have more whites. That would be racist, but the flip side is as well. You're a closet racist aren't you NJ?

No, I would direct the same criticism at the entire Deep South, although I do think that even by Deep South standards, Alabama is extreme.....

but I could make a case for California, Florida, or Texas probably.

Make a case? The case is already made. In terms of producing FBS talent, having traditional programs, and numerous NFL draft picks, it starts and ends with California, Florida, and Texas. Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Georgia would be right behind them.

I don't understand what priorities have do with any of this. There are huge football (pro and college) fans all over this nation. Hell the Big 10 has 3 100,000+ seat stadiums. Its not like the state government in 'Bama just has a list of things to do and a Saban statue was a top of their budget debates. Football (and other sports for whichever nation across the world) is just a great escape, hobby, entertainment passion etc. for millions of Americans that can leave the economy, jobs, politics, in the back of their mind for at least a few hours during a few months of the year. And personally I dont see anything wrong with that
