Shaq
Broadway Joe
Sir Charles
Peyton
More so because of their career as coaches but Bear, Spurrier and Bowden would be there. The majority of people nowadays only know Sir Charles post career.
Herschel Walker
Bo Jackson
Reggie White
If you count cheerleading as a sport I would throw Sela Ward in there (UA)
If you count sports news industry Vols can claim Paul Finebaum

That’s too bad. Dude was the epitome of cool!
Joe Namath might be the coolest athlete that has ever lived. Athletes now try to imitate, but can never duplicate. This was the 60s and early 70s...I think everyone knew who Broadway Joe was. Now with the vastly larger media world more guys get more exposure, but it's spread out thinner. In the late 60s, only Ali was bigger than Namath.

I wouldnt recognize Archie Manning if i was eating dinner beside him. Not that he wasnt a great player just not that recognizable.

He's signing his distillery bottles on Fort Moore next week. I have a small wager that I can get him to write Roll Tide on one.

I remember in 3rd grade I had a teacher who was just a huge Bear Bryant fan that she cried in class when he died. That was the first time I’d ever heard of him . I don’t think any other kid knew who he was either but us football/sports fans understood when she explained it to us why she was crying and who he was.
Do you feel that reaction from for Bear Bryant the coach or the player. Because the thread is about the players. Bear Bryant as a player is nothing in 2024.

What is the rationale behind Emmit Smith at 4 and Bo Jackson at 9?
People that know Emmit knew of Bo even though Smith played later. People didnt eat tidepods then and were more aware.

Now, I would be offended at this post normally, but I can’t be offended by the truth!
