What are early reports on the pirate program?

Excited for the experiment - wanted UT to hire him during the hiring debacle

We feel pretty good offensively. KJ Costello was a really good QB at Stanford so we think he'll do good in this type of offense. WRs seem to be better which isn't saying much. And we think our RB depth is good ftm. Defense has some big question marks. CB depth not looking good. But still feel it'll be better than a Washington State Leach defense since I think our players are better than WSU defensive ones

Was curious if any WSU players would transfer to us due to them not playing but nothing sparking atm

Did the Miss coast get much damage from Marco and Laura?

Does Leach have a boat down there that you know of?

No damage that I have heard of.
Leach has a house in Key West. I don't think he has a boat but I could be wrong.

Leach said in his last press conference that the offense has been installed and now they are just "polishing it up". That definitely makes me feel better about offensive production this year.

Defense is coming along but still has a lot of work to do.

my take

Offense

Strengths - QB KJ- as good as advertised so far Will Rogers impressing and Fitz still there in mix... nice group with more coming next year

OL - only unknown is a five star at LT that is looking really good in practice, great feet, the rest are all SEC hardened and pretty good. very nice group with some depth

RB - Kylin Hill returning SEC rushing leader, has impressed with his route running and hands... they love him. The whole group though has brought praise from coaches. They really like the RB room here.

TE turned inside WR dropping some weight in process - Leach said he has never had these type of athletes on offense. Hew is loving trying to find a way to use them. He said he usually had to use em on Defense but he has plenty of them on that side of the ball at State. Possible new weapon and wrinkle.

WR unknown unused commodity? Leach has said the athleticism and desire is there and they were further along than he expected. He also said if you can't catch the ball, then you won't be playing in his offense. So, look for some to move on or change sides of the ball but there are a dozen WR on the roster. They have been spreading the reps around and that is about to change. He will zone in on the ones performing and they will get the reps to polish them up. Expect a Leach offense with lots of balls in the air.

Defense

Not as much info on them. There are some really good players on this side of the ball but some glaring holes to fill. dB's...it's going to be learning curve for some avg group at best.. DL - depth concerns but good 1st line group. LB - solid

Overall, it could be some shoot outs to get some wins but who know what this team will do. I keep hoping the defense steps up and plays top 25-30 level, if they do that, they might just beat a few folks.

Others have pretty much said it, but Ill chime in with my opinion.

I think the offense will be fine. The Air Raid as Leach teaches it is about finding the weakness in the defense and exploiting it. You'd be amazed at the number of people that think we are going to Hail Mary every play.

State will score some points and Costello will rack up yards.

However, I think our defense will struggle in a 3-3-5. I don't like it for where the SEC is in 2020 and I think someone like Arkansas will beat us in a shootout because of it. Leach's doom in the SEC is not going to be his offense. Its going to be the lack of defense.

I think we will go 5-5 with one bad loss (Arkansas, Texas A&M) and one big upset (LSU, Georgia)

I'll answer the question in more of a long term outlook than just a this year viewpoint, because frankly I doubt State will get much attention this year as they're likely not winning more than 4 or 5 games.

Big picture, I think Leach has been very good for the culture of the program. Outsiders would be surprised at how bad it got under Moorhead. Mullen's teams were consistently good in large part because of the culture he established, and Moorhead nearly burned the whole thing down in two years. From all indications, the strength and conditioning program has been a huge upgrade from the previous staff and frankly I think State just has better coaches than they had with Moorhead. It's a staff that mostly was at WSU the last few years so there's a lot of continuity and familiarity and I think that's an underrated part of college football, especially if you aren't a school who just reloads with talent every year.

I think you won't really see the fully operational Air Raid until Year 3. Having Costello and one more year of Hill will be nice this season, but there are too many question marks at WR and on defense to expect this team to be be anything more than just OK, and next year you're starting over with younger players at various positions. State is in a weird spot where they have a lot seniors this year at key spots and then a lot of freshmen and sophomores who will be playing a lot for the first time. So I think you'll see about two transition seasons where they're in the .500-ish range and then in 2022 they should be poised to have a really nice year.

Expectation-wise, I don't see any reason to think Leach can't be what he's been at every other stop. State can recruit better players than Texas Tech and Washington State can, although obviously the talent level of the opponents is greater too. Leach has never won a conference or division championship and I don't expect him to at State, but he also has a pretty high floor. I honestly think he probably has results similar to what Jackie Sherrill had at State, things may be up and down at times and there may be some WTF losses, but he will also upset some people with this offense and should generally be competitive every year. And then maybe once or twice the stars align with the right players in place and he can have a season similar to his 2008 Texas Tech team or his 2018 Washington State team.
